Hello, fellow bees!
My fiance and I are iPoding it for our reception and are finding it extremely difficult to narrow our playlist. (As documented on my blog, we have eight hours of music picked for an eight-hour reception — yikes! And that’s after a first pass where I already cut the more melancholy songs that we originally added because we like them but that aren’t very wedding-oriented…)
Does anyone have suggestions for how to trim things down? There’s just too much good music out there!

Your list looks really good. You’ve got a lot of variety there. Why are you thinking that you need to trim the list?
For example if you are doing jazz at the cocktail hour… just cut it off whenever the next activitiy comes up. It’s definitely better to have too much rather than too little!

You may also try to prioritize them. Like doctorgirl mentioned, better to have too much — it’s possible some songs might get skipped. (I’ve heard the downside of some iPod receptions is when a guest flips through the songs, I’m not sure if you’re preventing that or if your guests are too mature to do that!)
You could put some that sound similar, or less favorite songs by the same artists, lower on the playlist and they’ll be there backup. I looked at your list (awesome!) and you could even prioritize within each category.
What are your plans for playing the iPod? I’m doing an iPod wedding too, but it will mostly be background music.

Fortunately, I have a coordinator to run the iPod, so we’ll have a playlist for when people are eating, for special dances, for the end of the night, etc. Thanks for your suggestions! You’re both absolutely right that too many is better than too few. 🙂
