Another post got me curious.... how are most bees rockin' their nails? In high school I would buy those stick on things from target because I was a chronic nailbiter... then they would pop off in the middle of class. Not hot. haha. My mom told me she'd give me $20 if I could go 3 months without biting my nails and....... she cured me! Oh what a 15 year old will do for $20 haha.
I still have a tendency to bite them (especially the thumbs) when I'm nervous, but the best way to combat that is to keep polish on them all the time because I don't like the taste of it. For the most part I have nice natural nails.
What about the rest of you? Natural? Fake? If you have fake-- why? (No judgment... I just never got spending that much money on something you can grow yourself. But then again, I'm cheap!)
natural, but i did have fakes becausei was a huge nail biter.. it still pops up when i am stressed, like now i have no nails, but when i am pretty happy (or thinking engagement is imminent) my nails are beautiful. now they look like horror stories lol!!!
I bite mine and have little nubs LOL, so if I want any, I've gotta go fake. I've tried and tried and finally come to realize I'm never going to be able to do it.
I've been getting my nails done for years. Personally I just like the way they look better than my own. Currently I have acrylics on but for the wedding I'm going gel all the way. But yes, it is a pain in the arse to get them filled in every two week. The place I go charges $12 for a fill. I have long fingers so I love having them look perfect.
Natural, but only because I totally can't afford fake. Well, that and I absolutely HATE the way my nails feel once the fake nails come off.
I have fake nails...
They just look so nice and clean though, I love having them! (Even though they are an expense). I get pink and whites put on, they are less harsh than acrylics.
I have to keep my short to play instruments, but a few weeks ago, I started letting them grow out. I was so careful so they wouldn't break because I'm a major clutz. Then, last week, three broke in one day, I had "a moment" and cut them all off. So, we'll see what grows back in two weeks, and if it's not much, I might consider fake nails.
Maybe someone can comment on them. I have had them before, but they were SO thick that I couldn't really function with them. Is there some sort of trick or alternative?
I've been wearing acrylics since I was about 14 until recently. I'm a nursing student so I can't wear them because of the bacteria and germs they harbor - several times more than just natural painted nails!!! So ever since learning about the statistics, I decided not to continue to wear them, although I can't anyway because of our clinicals. I will probably do gels when we get married and for trips and things, but they're coming off right away. However, in the summer, I do get my toes down weekly including acrylics on my big toes since those nails don't seem to grow well
I have acrylic put over my natural nail. So all the length is my own- not tips.
I started getting it done a few weeks before my wedding because with just my natural nails, they get to a nice length and then they all start breaking. I really wanted the shots of us holding hands wearing our new rings to not be a shot of my uneven, stumpy nails!
I thought about getting tips right before the wedding, but I was DIYing my flowers, my makeup and my hair and I didn't want to be incapacitated by suddenly long nails.
So I started getting it done about 3 weeks before the wedding and by the wedding day, they were at a nice lenght. I like it so much, that I'm still doing over a year later! It's really nice to have them all be nice and strong (no more painful breaking below the cuticle). And the 1 hour every 2 to 3 weeks that I spend at the nail place is nice and relaxing and worth the $18 to get them filled.
@jelly bean: I hate when mine are thick too. You can ask them to thin them down... they usually just use their little tool to sand them down so they're thinner and not as bulky.
@JellyBean- try going to a different place to get them done- if you see someone with nice nails, ask where they go. As I said above, I have the acrylic over my own nails. The first place I went were kind of quick and lazy about it, so it was a pretty thick layer of acrylic. The place I go now does a really impeccable job so it's not very thick at all- and because I keep them still relatively short, most people are surprised that they are not natural. Still- I carry toothpicks around with me because the only thing I can't do with them because of the thickness, is pick my teeth if something gets stuck in there!
my dad's a podiatrist, he tells horror stories about what he sees that comes out of nail salons. i wanted fake nails in middle school, my mom wouldn't let me get them so i grew my own out. that was the end of that, i've had my own ever since.
maybe i'm just lucky but i've never really had a nail break. i find my natural nails grow much faster/look nicer when i'm taking my vitamins though :)
I always have my done french mani, natural nail. I've been going every week since I've been 16. Expensive, but oh so worth it. I can't describe it other than I work hard every day, and the 45 minutes in the salon is so relaxing and having my nails done french mani just makes me feel clean and put together. I can go w/o makeup...ok, maybe, I'm kinda a diva, but I can't go w/o my nails being done. Occasionally I'll get solid color on special occassions to match an outfit. Until I turned 22 all this pampering was on daddy's credit card. I'm so glad my FI puts up with me!! (Well....my dad warned him when we got serious that I was a very sweet hearted person but high maintenance and he expected him one day (when he was my FI/DH) to be able to keep me in the same manner he did)
Thank you so much, guys!! I have very thin nails that break over anything. So, this might be something I should just bite the bullet and get. My coworkers almost all have fake nails (the girls), and they are letting me know where they go. I guess it's the same place - with flat screen tvs. Seriously don't know what I'd do without the hive.
I have natural nails all year long. But for my wedding its fake all the way. I know this is quite vain, but I would hate to have a nail break on the day of my wedding and not be able to do anything about it.
@aoebuckeye-- that is too funny about your dad saying that! At least your FI knew what he was getting himself into :)
I have never used fake nails. Although lately I should probably spend a little more effort on my existing ones.
@CorgiTales- haha! Yup, he was warned fair and square
Daddy spoiled me and warned him I must be spoiled by him too, so he can never question my self acknowledged diva crazyness! I'm really not that bad, I promise! I just like my fingernails clean...weird personal thing, haha! And my mani's don't last longer than a week cause my English Bulldog knaws on them.
LOL, natural. But I think it's important to go with what you're comfortable with, so if the false ones are your thing, rock them! =)
Natural. I used to do the acryclic thing in high school in the late 90s, and now they just seem so small-town/dated. I dunno. I always keep my nails short and alternate between square and round, but I usually have something that's kind of in between the two. For the wedding, I just had them painted a pretty pale pink. I can hardly ever keep color on for more than a few days, but I love getting manicures.
My nails right now are natural, but I will be getting acrylics (solid color, not french) for the wedding. I used to get them done all the time, but I can't be bothered at the moment. My nail girl is great (I still go for pedicures) and she does acrylics really naturally, not too thick at all.
@aoebuckeye- my dad said basically the same exact thing to my fiance, lol! When Mr. R asked my dad's permission to marry me he said "great, she's your problem now!" All my friends said "that's a brave man to marry you" gee, thanks! I may be a little high maintenance, but dang!
Natural for sure. Even though my nails are pretty short because they don't grow well. I used to have acrylics when I was in college, but never again ;o)
Haha I have natural right now, but I do think I will get them done for my wedding. I use to get the fake cheap nails from the drug stores and stuff too, haha. They would like pop off the next day. So annoying, and a waste of 5-7 bucks.
NAtural, I cant stand the feeling of acrylics. My sister did get this thing done, called permanent nail polish or something. they paint a SUPER thin coat of silk filler over your natural nail, so it basically just toughens it without making it thicker. They look great, ALMOST enough to make me consider changing my mind. I just really cant stand fakes on me - tried it a few times. Check out the article here

I love my natural nails - and I never really paint them either - I use that natural buffer system to make them all gorgeous and shiny!
My nails are strong and they grow fast, but I'm not allowed to grow them past the tip of my finger. The reason is because I simply cannot function with nails -- I end up scratching myself and everyone around me. Repeatedly.
So I'll buff them and maybe paint them a subdued pinky-beige for the wedding, but they will be short.
Mine are natural. I'm lucky that my nails grow well. The only time they are short and stubby is when I neglet to file them down and they start breaking off from being too long. If I get regular manicures, they're great but I'm trying to save $$$ and do it myself.
I was a biter, then I got braces.
Now I cut my nails every few months, either when I'm feeling down, or if I've broken more than three.
Au naturale! The women on my mom's side of the family have beautiful hands and nails, and I was lucky enough to inherit that. It looks like I have a french manicure as long as I don't do too much yard work or washing. :)
My nails are natural, and I can't remember the last time I had fake nails, sometime in high school though. They looked very unnatural on me, but it was in the 90's, so I'm sure they've come a long way since then. I always keep my nails pretty short and usually unpolished, though for the wedding I will actually get a manicure and add some polish.
I have fake nails that I have been wearing for years, they are short, rounded and very thin so they look natural. I also always have them painted red. I think the pink and white fake nails went out of style in 1997.
I used to get picked on when I was younger (like 13?) for not going to the nail salon and spending 30 dollars to get my nails done. I don't mean a mani-pedi, or anything simple, I'm talking about full sets, airbrushing, rhinestones, 3 inches of nail... on a 13 year old.
Has anyone seen the Barbie nail printer? I want it soooo badly.
My nails are natural, but I will get fake nails for extra special occasions. I love how they look, I'm just way too hard on my hands and too broke to have them often. I will definitely get them for my wedding.
I also miss fun nail polish colors when I have fake nails. But I haven't had them in almost two years now, so I've been missing them!
Mine are natural, and they usually look pretty good too, except when one breaks off. Then it looks like a bleeding, stubby mess. I guess should trim them more often, but I really like them when they're longer.
I used to have fake nails and I loved them but one day I realized how much it was costing me not to mention I went to a salon that was like 20 minutes from my house and it just took up so much of my time. So I quit. I don't think I'll ever put them back on...just the amount of time it took bugs the shit out of me.
I have terrible nails. The only time in my life I had nice nails was when I was pregnant. They're just flakey and brittle - even with polish. When I want nice nails, I will buy the $5 cheapies at Target and wear those, but for everyday, I just put up with my gross nails.
I'm lucky to have really strong natural nails that grow very quickly. I've never worn fakes or acrylics but I almost always have my nails done.
Natural. I can't stand fake...the few times I've had them (homecoming, prom) I've ripped them off the next day. I can't justify spending all the money on something I'm just going to take off the next day because I hate the way they feel. I am however probablly going to get me some fake ones for our wedding day (hopefully I can keep them on till the end of the honeymoon)
Natural and although they grow like summer grass I almost always keep them short.
