I debated and debated between black or navy bridesmaid dresses – and I think I just really love Navy. I’ve already fought off the criticism that black and navy don’t go together (the groomsmen will definitely be in black tuxes).
So, now I’m trying to find a line of cocktail length dresses for my bridesmaids to choose from (I just want to give them a designer, fabric, color, length and let each one pic their own style). I’m going for more of a true navy (dark) vs a lighter navy. So far, I like Alfred Sung, but I was hoping to find more options in that price range or lower. Any ideas?
Am I crazy for thinking navy and black can go together?!

@MrsFortuNate: I don’t have many options to look for dresses but I think the tholw “black and navy dont go together” is a thing of the past. I think it would look really sharp.

My BMs are in navy, and the GMs will be in black suits with navy vests and ties! So you’re not crazy 🙂
I decided to go the easy route and do David’s Bridal Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, since my BMs are split between the two coasts so that seemed the simplest way to let them all go to the store on their own time and pick the dress they liked best in Marine. I also limited their choices to chiffon, because the other fabrics looked like they would be better used as window coverings than dresses 😛 believe it or not, the chiffon cocktail-length options at DB are really nice and super cheap. One picked the halter and the other two picked the one-shoulder and they all seem pretty happy about it! They look more like sundresses than Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, which makes them at least SLIGHTLY more likely to wear them again sometime …

@MrsFortuNate: Not at all. My Bridal Party wore “Marine” from Davids Bridal which is a very very dark blue. My Groomsmen wore black tux with marine colored vests. My girls wore navy dresses with white pearls and white flowers and black shoes.
Maybe I’m biased but I think its a great combo!

I am with LuvMySailor my Bridesmaid or Best Man wore also the “Marine” which is a Navy Blue Bridesmaid or Best Man dress and the Groomsmen were in black tuxs with silver vests/ties. It went well together

Awesome thanks ladies! I think I’ve just been making so many big decisions lately (photog, videographer) that it makes me nervous about all the other ones too!
I will check out DB Marine online – it looked a little bit too bright for me, but I will go look in person cause you just can’t always tell on a computer screen.
I’m still debating what fabric I want, probably something more flowy, but obviously the Alfred Sung dresses are a little more structured. Either way, I want it to be elegant.

My Bms were supposed to wear navy but I ended up falling in love with this one dress and it only comes in a purple color. Fiance really wanted his GMs to wear navy so Im thinking about keeping their vests and tie navy. One of my Maid/Matron of Honor thinks its not going to go well together and the vests and tie need to be the same purple. She hasnt spoken to me since I told her those are the wedding colors so they ARE going to go well together. If she doesnt want to be in my wedding because of the colors IVE chosen to be in MY wedding then thats her problem. I talked to my cousin yesterday who is a GM/usher in my wedding. Im thinking the GMs/Ushers could wear the purple tie and vests and just the Gms could wear the navy. I havent quite decided the color of the outside of their tuxes. Dont really want to do the black because it will be an outdoor wedding in the spring and its just going to be too hot. But in the end, your wedding is about what YOU want to make. This is a chance for your inner creativity to come out. Its whatever you want.

Black is neutral and goes with anything and everything. navy is nearly neutral too, think of dark blue jeans, you can wear them with any color

J.Crew has a great line of bridesmaid dresses in navy!

I had Navy Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses by Mori Lee. I was initially worried about the navy and black tux issue but never even gave it a second look on the wedding day. I loved the look.

@MrsFortuNate: Definately go into the store to see it. It looks nothing like the color shown on the website.

My girls are wearing navy…guys in black tux’s. I guess there was a time where people might frown at the combination, but now it’s considered totally doable. I found my girls dresses at http://www.dessy.com/. Good luck!
