I want something fun, lighthearted, but not necessarily a trashy novel to take on vacation next week. Definitely a page-turning, though. I like period novels and want to take a Lisa See novel with me, but I want my other one to be a little more of a "fun" book. I haven't gotten into a lot of the 'typical' girl type books and sometimes they're good and sometimes they're just silly/stupid.

Anyone got a good one up their sleeve? It's been awhile since I've read and book and felt refreshed by it.

Chelsea Handler's new book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang is funny.  As are her others if you haven't read those.

Jen Lancaster's books are also hysterical.

Janet Evanovich has a great series that is referred to as the 'Plum Series' which are a little bit of mystery with a lot of hilarity.

I also LOVE Emily Giffin's book Something Borrowed that is followed with Something Blue. Great set.

I just read "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin and loved it.  It's a chick book but so insightful and well written.

I'm with the bees above - the Emily Giffin series of Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Baby Proof and Love the One You're With were all very cute.

Try "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield, "The World According to Garp" by John Irving, "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory, "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole, and anything by Jennifer Weiner.

I say Emily Giffen as well. Something Borrowed and Something Blue are really great no-brainer, interesting reads. I've read them each at least four times, usually on a flight or at the beach.

I love Emily Giffen, but you must read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. It is set in the South in the 1960's. It is funny, heartfelt, and serious all at the same time. Definitely a page turner and I stayed up too late every night trying to finish. I loved it and have since passed it on to 4 other friends! Have an awesome vacation!

    1. "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen
    2. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon
    3. "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" by Sloane Crossley
    4. "Animal Dreams" by Barbara Kingsolver

None of them are too fluffy or light (well, #3 is), but they're pretty easy reads.

Janet Evanovich is AWESOME!  great fun light hearted mysteries, i literally read the first 10 books back to back, i couldn't put them down!

Nancy Martin writes a series called the Black bird sisters.  The first book is called How to Murder a Millionaire this series is amazing as well

lastly i love Joanne Flukes Cake/cookie murder mysteries! fun mysteries with yummy recipies in between the chapters!

all are easy reads and very hard to put down, i would recommend taking 2 or 3 of them, i can read one in about 3 hours (or less)

    have fun on your trip!

I too will have to suggest "Something BOrrowed" I read it in one long day of pool/hanging in my hotel room on vacation last week! It was a page turner, but at the same time I could put it down and pick it back up without feeling like I was lost or had to re-read something. I cant wait to read "Something Blue"!

Also I will second "Water for Elephants" its REALLY good. If you havent read Life of Pi I would suggest that as well. Another one of my favorites of all time is "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" Ive read it 3 times and Im sure I will read it again someday!

I seem to read a lot of young adult books these days (I'm a high school teacher) but I really enjoyed "Hunger Games"--I can't think of the author's name right now, but it was entertaining.  Also, the "Maximum Ride" series by James Patterson...of course if you want really brainless, but entertaining and fun to pretend you are a teenage girl...there is the Twilight series :)  Enjoy reading!

Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld is one of my Top 5 books.  American Wife is her newer book, and its also a great read.  I agree with rachelss that Time Travelers Wife the book is much better than the movie.  Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri is wonderful, as was The Namesake - her writing is beautiful.  So many good books, so little time!

@ tigs Pal : I almost spilled my tea I was laughing so much over the twilight comment.

I don't really read 'light' or 'fluffy' books, so I'm not sure my suggestions will be helpful.

A complicated kindness [Miriam Toews] is a really interesting book, not super light, but written in a way that is easy to read--though the main character is a not yet woman-girl, so it may not be to your taste.

Anything by Douglas Coupland is usually funny, sacrastic and references modern pop-culture--and is usually quite easy for me to finish in a few days. I haven't read it yet, but lots of people I know rave about The Gum Thief.

Thanks for the recommendations, ladies! I'll have to save this thread for later. I picked up a Chelsea Handler book per hotchild's recommendation and Lisa See's "snow flower and the fan" book.

PS i looooove phillipa gregory's novels. But, i've finished them off already! lol. And i actually haven't seen ANY of the movies you guys are mentioning cuz I know the books are always way way better =]

    Thanks again!

I thought of another one. P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern. The movie was horrible compared to the book. I was cracking up and crying and cracking up some more with the book. Fun, fast read!

I second The Help. Such an amazing book--I couldn't put it down. Also, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society--a little sad, because it's set right after WWII, but very funny and uplifting.

Since you said you like period novels, I HAVE to recommend almost any book by Georgette Heyer. I like to think of her as "Jane Austen-light". They are so entertaining and sweet and the sort of book where what you want to happen does. Really enjoyable, easy reading and not the typical "chick lit," which I'm not so much a fan of. My fave is Arabella. Definitely look out for them!

I adore Jen Lancaster so I vote for her as well (she's very funny!).  My favorite "chick lit" series is the Little Lady Agency series by Hester Browne.  It starts with The Little Lady Agency. It's not your "usual" chick lit, and I found it really refreshing!

@2PeasinaPod You definitely should!! But be warned, they can be super addictive!! Like I said, my recommendation would be Arabella first (it was the first I read and still my favorite), but I've read quite a few, so I can recommend others if you like. Heyer wrote over 70 books; it can be tricky to decide which one to read!

Laurie Notaro is hilarious!  Her auto-biographical books are my favorite (not such a fan of her novel).

    Idiot Girl's Aciton Adventure Guide

    Autobiography of a Fat Bride

I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies)

We Thought You Would Be Prettier

An Idiot Girl's Chirstmas: A True Tale From the Top of the Naughty List

I love Paula Marantz Cohen's modernizations of Pride & Prejudice (Jane Austen in Boca), Much Ado About Nothing (Much Ado about Jessie Kaplan), and Persuasion (Jane Austen in Scardsdale).  They're light-hearted and Cohen is actually a pretty good writer.

If you're looking for a light read with a historical twist (and maybe a little romance...), try the Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig or And Only to Deceive by Tasha Alexander.  Both are the first books in a series.  Personally, I like Wiliig's novels better, but both are fun and girly.

If you're looking for more in the way of romance, try Susan Elizabeth Philips or Jennifer Cruise.

-Memoirs of a geisha is an amazing book (terrible movie) best book i have ever read...written by a man, but he captures a woman's feelings to a tee. simply amazing.

-Time traveler's wife is SO much better than the movie, but it's depressing...i read it when i got engaged, and that book made me crrrryyyy

    -Harry potter, of course

    -Twilight - makes me randy.

-Other Boleyn Girl...very well written...not the greatest movie as it was nothing like the book

    -Atonement...also amazing as a movie

-The Reader...also amazing as a movie

-Revolutionary Road...also amazing as a movie

    -The Lovely Bones

    -In Her Shoes

-Their Eyes Were Watching God - very good movie

    -Wicked!!

    -To Kill A Mockingbird

    -Gone With the Wind

sorry, i'm a book worm, i could go on forever!

i too find it hard to get into the popular girl novels....i'm very much into period novels like you are
