I have seen little tiered cupcake "trees" at WalMart, Hobby Lobby, etc. They are in right now, should be easy to find!
Seriously I saw them at WalMart a few months ago in the party section!
There was a posting in the last couple of days with instructions on how to make one with tin cans covered with paper and cake plates edged with ribbon. They were beautiful.
I will try to find the link.
This is not the one I was thinking of but close: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/03/02/do-it-yourself-tiered-stands/

The one I was thinking of had 3 different sized tin cans covered in paper of a design the bride liked.
The plates were 3 sizes of foil covered cardboard cake plates glued together , and edged with ribbon. The plates were then glued to the cans with the largest can and plate on the bottom, working up to the small size.

Dear Brides!
My wedding is on August 27. I am having 140 cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake. My cake baker does not own a cupcake stand, so now I am searching for one either to rent or to purchase. After calling a few local party rental stores, most carry stands that can hold up to 50 cupcakes. So, I'm thinking of purchasing one and trying to not break my budget. I would appreciate it if you can please share your experience if you have had cupcakes at the weddings or any suggestion/recommendaton on where to get an affordable to still quality cupcake stand.
You can email me directly: ichung2@gmail.com
Thanks!
