OK, not from Hawaii, but FH is, and I think the type of lei you're describing (a maile lei) would be totally appropriate, based on what my FH is planning on getting for him and his best man.
This link (from a random google of "men's lei") shows the groomsmen wearing a less ornate lei, but I don't think it necessarily has to be that simple, just wouldn't want your friend upstaging the groom if he were wearing one too.
a lot of guys wear kukui nut lei. they have deluxe versions that have buds and foliage in them.

The person who introduced me to my fiance is Hawaiian. We were trying to think of a special way to recognize him at our wedding and I thought having a lei for him might be nice. I remember him wearing one for his wedding (I think it was mostly leaves, not all flowers and it was open ended, not a full "necklace").
Would this be appropriate? Is there any style of lei we should stay away from?
