Hubby-2-B and I are both semi-retired, and we travel alot.
We love Charleston, we are also fans of nearby Savannah as well. We will be seeing both on our Honeymoon (Part I)
A carriage ride is a MUST DO… as is the Market area, and do plan some time to visit the Charleston Museum (Est. 1773 — oldest museum in the USA). The historic homes that are open for tours are also fascinating.
Lots of great eats to be had in Charleston as well (one of the cities in the US with the highest concentration of Award Winning Restaurants). We enjoyed a night of fine dining at Hanks, seafood on the pier at Fleet Landing, and Low Country eats at Barbara Jean’s.
As a travel nut I will recommend that you check out TripAdvisor’s website, as they the foremost resource for Travel Planning on the internet. They are chocked full of great info, and they have Boards / Forums just like this… where you can post Questions about ANY Destination in the world. You’ll get to chat with locals who live in the area, and they can give you lots of insider info and tips, to help you plan a great vacation. I will not travel anymore without checking in with TripAdvisor first.
They also have a HUGE section dediacated to vacation rentals (cottages, houses, condos, apartments etc) that is run thru their sister website FlipKey… I’ve rented thru them before and have NEVER had an issue (you have to be careful when you rent privately… there are lots of properties that aren’t as they advertise, or are actual on-line scams)
Hope you enjoy your time in Charleston… it is a very photographic city, so plan to take lots of pics.
PS… If for some reason a Private Rental doesn’t work out… I can recommend the DoubleTree it is well located near the Market, and close to the Carriage Stables, Restaurant scene, and the FREE In-City Transit system (two lines)… it is also part of the Hilton Group of properties, so nice amenities (incredible beds and sheets). One of the best sleeps we’ve ever had in a Hotel… lol, Hubby-2-B didn’t want to leave.
