I've definitely heard of higher alteration costs, but I'm not going with anyone like that!
I know several brides (including myself) who used or are using Mary Catomy, if you don't mind a treck out to Schiller Park. She's altering a sample size for me that is about two sizes too large and making the shape more mermaid-y and she still comes in under $300 (so far -- I've only done one fitting). She's wonderfully efficient, and you can find a lot of glowing reviews for her on the Knot. Her email is <span class="HcCDpe">catomy@sbcglobal.net
Good luck!
If you need a seamstress, Daly Casia is also very good. She is a retired seamstress and works out of her home in Chicago, close to the Niles border. I think she had about 15 years of experience with a bridal salon and now just this stuff for fun. I asked her about my wedding alterations and she is going to only charge me $150 for everything.
I've seen her work with bridesmaid dresses (making and altering them) and it is impeccable.
I've used the tailor at Willow Cleaners (in Lincoln Park) for everything from jeans to bridesmaid dresses. They are the sweetest ladies & everything has been perfect.
Alterations from my dress place start at $250 - no thank you!
I second Mary Catomy, I used her too and my total bill was $200. This was for taking up the hem of my dress, taking up the shoulders of my v-neck, taking in my 2nd reception dress which had a lot of beading... AND she de-poofed my veil for free.

The place where I purchased my wedding dress charges $400 min. for alterations (minimum implying that it can be more but depending on the exact alterations you have done).
Does anyone think this is outrageous besides me?
Can anyone recommend a fantastic seamstress that has a ton of experience with bridal alterations in Chicago that can alter my wedding gown for less?
Thanks,
MelissaAttachments
