Hmm...Goose Island Brewery is cool (www.gooseisland.com) -near north side; in the West Loop I really like Market Bar (www.marketbarchicago.com) of course there are a ton of others--check out metromix for reviews. Hope this helps!
thanks! This helps. Sometimes those review places are too overwhelming, and since I'm looking for a place in a small area, sometimes they are especially overwhelming!
A lot of the hotel bars are fun because they are high in the sky giving you a great view! I just went to James Hotel (which is right by Chicago Theatre on State) and enjoyed the view, as well as Trump Tower's bar and Signature Room. These are def. more swankier though. Going to Greek town could be fun too.
If you are looking for a more low key bar, Sweetwater is a newer bar on Michigan Ave.
i work right near union station, and for work happy hours, we either go to Cactus Bar & Grill or Franklin Tap. I definitely wouldn't call either one "upscale" but they're nice and low-key. Franklin Tap is a bit smaller, but it's got a pub-feel to it which is nice. Plus they have really good food.

I work in the Loop, but never go out in the loop! A friend of mine is coming to town and wants to go out for drinks near my work. I'm looking for a place that won't be to crowded/expensive/typical. Any suggestions? And close to Union Station is a plus!
