We looked at the Thayer - it was nice, and they have a few options on venue rooms. However, it all felt a bit run down to me and the security is a bit of a pain. We had our wedding across the river from the Thayer at the Garrison and it was just lovely. they have a highly rated restaurant on premise so the food is delicious, the views are amazing and I looooved the staff. BUT no hotel on site - just four hotel rooms upstairs. We had the Thayer and a hotel in fishkill (The Sierra Hotel) for our guests and bussed them to and from the wedding (only 4 people stayed at the Thayer, the rest at the Sierra).
They were both about 15-20 minutes I think. It is the only real downside to the Garrison, no good, nearby hotel. The Sierra is new, has really nice reasonably priced rooms, a "lodgy" feel, a ton of suites for families (<$200) and one of the nicest free brunches I have seen. BUT it is not in a scenic location which is a shame - across from a Wal mart :( We rented the buses because I couldn't let people enjoy a 4 hour open bar and then drive on strange, curvy, dark roads.
I agree -- we are really set on an open bar but don't want people driving after afterward. That outdoor area from your picture looks beautiful, but was there an indoor ceremony option too? I'm really paranoid about rain.
Yeah, I was also! They have a really nice covered, waterproof area right behind the chairs - it is a patio of sorts, so it still feels outside, but you won't get wet :) IT is better than most of the indoor backup options I saw (basically you have it in the same room as the reception!)
I would also check out The View in Piermont (Rockland County). Beautiful water views, stand-alone venue; excellent menu and, I thought, reasonable prices.
This was my first choice, however, my daughter wanted to be in or near Manhattan. We are from Rockland County.
Olomanany -- thank you for the recommendation. What venue did you and your daughter choose in the end?
kw947 - The ceremony and reception will be at Water's Edge in Long Island City. We have a large number of people coming in from California (groom's side) and they want to stay in the city...so this was a good compromise. Hopefully, everything will work out well :)
Interesting... we've been working under the assumption that we shouldn't force people to stay in the city if they don't want to b/c it will be expensive. It never occured to me that people may actively want to tay in the city. Good food for thought, thank you! And good luck!

Hi! I just starting planning my wedding (target date September/October 2009) and am having trouble finding venue options. I live in NYC but hate the prices (for myself and for hotels for my out-of-town guests), so I'm looking at the Westchester County and Lower Hudson Valley areas, or very northern new jersey. I also would prefer some type of hotel to make transportation easier, but preferably not a chain hotel. I'm considering visiting the following as first stops:
Tarrytown Estate; Mohonk Mountain House; Emerson Resort and Spa; The Rhinecliff; and The Thayer.
Any one have any opinions on these venues and/or additional suggestions?
Thanks!!!!!
