I would personally stick with one theme--trying to combine themes might get difficult, and start to look a little messy. I think that both of your ideas would translate well, but just as a single theme, not necessarily together.

I have two themes i want to have for my reception: aquarium and mardis gras. since i am a seattle native and some of my family originates from the south so i had a an idea about a south meets west theme. Half of the decor would be aquarium theme and other half mardis gras.
