I'm supposed to be going to a Bachelorette party in Atlantic City this weekend. I'm not a bridesmaid, but I'm one of only two girls that aren't bridesmaids going. I know that Irene is a threat to the whole Eastern seaboard, and may or may not touch down in AC this weekend, but it's making me really anxious. If I didn't go and all the girls did, I would still pay my share of the hotel.

If you don't know what I'm talking about - http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/article/tropical-depression-nine-storm-hurricane-irene_2011-08-20

So, if you were me, would you go?

Thats a toughy. I did see a projected time frame map. Its supposed to be by New York by Monday. So it will be more south of that on Sunday, etc.

Did u ask the other ladies if they were going? Do they feel comfortable going?

Do whats comfortable for u. I have to admit that I probably wouldnt go. I hear they are evacuating some of the islands on the east coast already.

    Hope it all works out.

how close are you to AC?  honestly, i grew up in south jersey, and i can count on one hand the number of times a "hurricane" has ever been more than a lot of rain and some wind at the shore.  usually the worst they get is holding tides in the back bays and some flooding, and i'm guessing you'll be at the casinos?  absolute worst there will be some power outages.  i would say that if they haven't evacuated the island and the other girls are going still, go ahead, you'll be paying for it anyway.  you won't be in any real danger, except for danger of being inconvenienced.  if you're too uncomfortable with it though, don't sweat it and just send along your regrets.  i can understand it being freaky for someone that didn't have hurricane and tropical storm warnings as a routine part of the her childhood, lol.

@Earlybride: Actually the other girls really arent aware of how severe it could be. Theyre just like Oh it might be raining a lot. Im not 100% comfortable with going and my husband who is the most logical/reasonable person I know says that he isn't all that comfortable either. He will always tell me when I'm overreacting.

I texted one of the MOHs to see if theyve talked about any other plans, but no response.

@cardus: Im about 4 hours from AC. So if they did have to evacuate or if there was flooding/heavy rain/high winds, it would be difficult to get home. Possible sure, but difficult.

I'm a big baby. If I lived anywhere near a hurricane region I would be turning tail and bolting out of there. The worst we get where I live is tornadoes and that's enough for me!

I dont think it ever really gets that bad up here on the East coast.  I'd still go.

I say go! I went to a bachelorette party in AC two weeks ago. Drove home in the worst rain of my life, but luckily had a friend to keep me company! Still totally worth it. Especially if there's a chance it may not even hit - I would go.

    AC is so much fun!

would you be leaving on sunday?  it looks like it's going to be "hitting" during the day on sunday.  maybe you could all party in AC and then crash at a hotel a little farther inland...share cab fare or something?

and it's highly likely that it won't be more than a tropical storm by the time it gets there...maybe only a tropical depression, which would feel like a windy thunderstorm that lasted for several hours, minus the thunder and lightning, lol.

I probably would go.  If things get too bad, you can bunker down together and watch movies.

Hey, totally not related, my DH will be in the area this weekend! If things get too bad I will send him your way to save you! :-)

When would you be going here? By then, they would have a better idea of the storms track.

@kaylee26: Id be going up Friday right after work and coming back Sunday (my bus is at 1PM) Theyve just changed the prediction though and it now says hurricane could touch down in AC Saturday evening. What Im most worried about is evacuation and trying to get home. I think I will just wait until it gets closer to make a decision.

I would wait until the very last minute possible to decide.  Like, if I was packed and it looked like it would get bad, I wouldn't go.  It's not worth it to put yourself in danger if you don't have to.

@PitBulLover: Do you have to make a decision today? I'd just pack to go, then wait until tomorrow to make a decision. A lot can change in 24 hours when it comes to hurricanes. The models will probably change again by Friday morning.

I'm in Florida and am very used to these storms, but I still wouldn't drive to the beach for the weekend if one was hugging the coast. Even without direct landfall, there are typically extreme power outages and lots of flooding. You might not be in any real danger in a Cat. 2 storm, but it can be very inconvenient. And if it managaes to stay a Cat. 3, that's where things tend to get dicey.

Honestly, seeing as it is an area that does not typically see these type of storms, I'm assuming they are going to be a lot more cautious and more likely to evacuate since residents aren't as used to the situation. And I'm sure a bunch of businesses will be closed from fear.

I'd really just play it be ear at this point and make a final decision tomorrow.

@bree72: no, I dont have to make a decision today. I think I will pack to go and see how things are tomorrow. It's not that I'm fearing for my life as much as it is I dont want to be stuck in AC trying to get home for hours and hours.

I've spoken with all the other girls going and all of them are really concerned, except the bride, because she grew up in FLA and is used to it!

I'm supposed to be in NYC for a Bridal Shower this weekend taking the bus up from DC.  I'm playing it by ear till I leave on Saturday but right now it's looking like I might not be able to make it!  I'm really worried about all the winds with buses!

I'm in the Philly area right now and it's storming like crazy, so if I was supposed to be going somewhere this weekend, I would be nervous.

Since you live 4 hours away, you might want to really think about what you already said...if it is evacuated, it might be really dangerous for you to get home.

I say go! The storm wont be there until Sunday afternoon/PM. If you were uncomfortable you could always leave after one night. Or sunday AM.

@soyjoy222: yeah, I honestly like to feel safe. The more I think about it, the less I want to go but I don't want the bride to hate me. It is in this case I am glad I'm not a bridesmaid!

I would probably go because it honestly isn't probably going to be anything more than lots of rain and wind by the time it gets there.  I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

But if you aren't comfortable, I'm sure the other girls would understand.  Play it by ear and see how it goes.

I live in MD and honestly it is rarely as bad as they make it outto be. I say go. I drove to Ocean City a few years ago during Ernesto. It was not fun, but it could have been much worse. After several hours driving in it I realized if I can make it through that then I can make it through any driving condition....lol.

@PitBulLover: I dont know if she will hate you...she might not want to go, either! I know that the weather channel now has the entire east coast in red on their map. I know sometimes it's not as bad as they make it out to be...but it is still really scary. Let us know what you decide!

    @soyjoy222: thanks for the support!

All the other girls are panicking now. We're considering going to Charlottesville instead. I feel so bad for the bride because her FI is going to New Orleans for his bachelor party and that's where she wanted to go originally. She is so bummed!

I was just looking at the radar, and it looks like it might get really nasty in Atlantic City. I would probably not go. I think going to Charlottesville might be better and safer. They are saying that this might be the worst hurricane to hit the Northeast in decades. Every time I look at the radar, its a little bit more ominous...

Being a person from Jersey (as you already know) they are advising people to stay away from the shores.  It's going to more than likely be a direct hit over the Jersey shores.

ETA: They are also evacuating.  You will more than likely be told to turn around.

Update: the AC trip is canceled. Its looking really severe right now. State of Emergency issued, people already evacuating, governor urging toursists not to come this weekend. So looks like my fears were in the right place.

I appreciate all your input! In the end, mother nature was a bitch!

We're supposed to go to Saratoga Springs this weekend and are still playing it by ear up until Saturday morning. I would hate to be traveling through the Berkshires through that kind of storm when we return Sunday!

    stay safe, fellow East Coast-ers!

I voted not to go because after what I saw on Good Morning America this morning it was hitting... period the end... because that spaghetti model thing they do had several "noodles" over Atlantic City and Sam Champion (the weather guy) said that when the model looks like that they're fairly certain of the track.  I'm very much a person to "go with my gut" and if you feel like you should stay at home I say to do it!  I wouldn't want to take a chance on it.

UPDATE:  Just saw on the news that they have a mandatory evacuation for the Jersey shore including Atlantic City so I DEFINITELY don't think you should go and who knows if they would even let you into the city.

If it's worrying you that much then don't bother going. You'll be freaking yourself out the whole time you are there. (And your DH will be freakin' out over you at home.)

@spitfire229: They're not allowing anyone in AC and the casinos are shutting down.  She'd have nowhere to go but to stand outside in the hurricane.  Plus the beaches in AC are really short and there'll be catastrophic flooding.  :)

For those who keep telling her she should go and have a great story to tell.
