My wonderful parents are throwing me and Fiance an engagment party! It’s going to be somewhat casual, at a rented hall in our home town. We’re having about 50 people – mainly immediate family, bridal party, and close family friends. We have decided not to give specific seating, and the food is going to be a full dinner and dessert, but buffet-style. We will also have an open bar of wine, beer, and soda. My problem is this… I don’t have any kind of timeline! We have the hall for 4 hours (plus two hours before for setting up) and I’m afraid it’s going to be a boring 4 hours of 50 people wandering around aimlessly.
So, HELP! I need a timeline and/or activities. My mom wants to have the dinner food set up as people are walking in so they can start eating right away. Should we do this, or will just having cheese platter/appetizers first, then dinner maybe a half-hour into, break things up better? We are also going to have a champagne toast – but with no specific seating, we’re going to just have to ask people to take a glass from the front table and then make the toast. How can we do this… do we just announce that it’s time for a toast in the middle of dinner?
As for activities, I don’t want people to be bored, but I also hate cheesy party games. I came up with about 15 trivia questions. I thought I could leave this up at it’s own table (maybe by the bar) and if people want to do it, they can. It would be questions about us and whoever gets the most points wins a prize. I would leave a drop-box for the answers, and then perhaps closer to the end of the night my Maid/Matron of Honor and I would take 10 minutes to count up the points and announce the winner. Does this sound like a good idea? I would love to hear any other non-cheesy trivia/game suggestions!!
We’ll also have our iPod set up with speakers. We have a playlist with all dinner kind of background music, but should we set up another playlist for dancing? How exactly would we announce that it’s time to dance, if we don’t have a DJ?
Please, e-party experts, give me some advice!
