My best friend’s baby boy will be 1 in a few months, so I want to start early to pick out the perfect gift! This is her first, and might be her only baby, so I want it to be meaningful. I’ve searched around, but want some ideas from the ladies who know since I don’t have any children yet myself! So, any ideas for the perfect first birthday gift? I’d like something unique, and maybe personalized somehow, but am open to any suggestions. I’d also like to get her a little something as a “congrats for surviving the first year” gift, so any suggestions for that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance! 🙂

My go to gift for a one year old is a step stool with their name on it in cut out puzzle letters. It’s personal, useful and will last a long time. It’s also not a toy or clothes which I’m sure they’ll get plenty of.
something like this:

Buy a small bookcase and start a library with a few books.

I love the books, he’s getting to the age to start loving them too. One of the those story time books that you can record your voice reading it to them, leave it blank for the parents or do it yourself.
Trucks/Planes/Cars are always good.
My SO got my 1 1/2 year old a Giant frog and he literally screamed with delight.

@julies1949: Yes!! Books are always an awesome gift, and usually what I get for kids. I like to look for ones with good illustrations and stories.

I’m wondering the same thing myself. My niece turns one next month. I thought about doing a piggy bank from my brother’s college and putting some money in it for college fund. My niece loves piggy banks so I know she’ll like that and my brother I’m sure will like the money for college. The other idea I have, my brother mentioned getting one of those trailers to pull behind the bike. So I might get that for them.
Like all the book ideas too! 🙂

My daughter got a Ride On toy for her 1st Birthday & that was one of her favorite gifts by far! She is 16 months now & still adores it. They vary in price & can be found on amazon, target, toys r us, etc.
She also loves these Hide n’ Squeak Eggs! They are a shape sorter, make a squeak noise & it’s unique
This Picnic Basket by Leapfrog is also a hit! It teaches shapes, colors, numbers etc & has songs
We also got a few money gifts which went to her college savings which was nice.

My son’s favorite gift at that age was a ride-on toy, too.
As a mom, I would appreciate the stool with his name and books/ bookshelf would be used for a long time.

Books are always a great idea….just makesure you write something inside the cover:) I have made scrapbooks for my nieces and nephews for their 1st birthday as well. Although they (the child) won’t appreciate it for a few years, it’s a great way for mom and dad to reminisce about the year that has just passed.

These ideas are great! I love the idea of the stool and the ride-on toy, I’ll have to see if she has them already. That picnic basket is also really cute, but it’s purple 🙁 Thanks ladies, keep the ideas coming!

I love experience gifts, and we ask for them a lot since the kids have SO MANY toys/clothes/books/etc… This year for Christmas, I’m asking for a year pass to the local baby gym and 6 months of gymnastics lessons for DD (she’s 2). I also love the idea of an annual pass to the zoo, the children’s museum, art/music classes, etc… Just ask the parents ahead of time if it’s a class, since they’ll need to pick something that fits with their schedules.

I got my nephew a train, and each cart had a letter spelling out his name – it was quite long. lol
I still have in my parents a Mahooosive teddy which I got for my first birthday from my Dad’s soccer team-mates. It was bigger than me until I went to high-school. I love him.
