My friends that got married last year did a bunch of shots on south congress. Also check out Mrs. Mouse's blog about her e-pics. I know she did hers at a pretty cool vintage car lot. I just saw an article too on offbeatbride.com. The photographer was Whitney Lee so maybe check out her site. Good luck. I'm gonna have to figure that out soon too.
Oh! I've actually been meaning to ask this question!! I'm from Austin, but I don't spend nearly enough time downtown, so all the places I can think of are a little more typical.
I know there is one place that I see a ton of engagement photos in Austin that is this really awesome bright green wall - but I can't figure out where it is!
thanks guys :) we'll definitely be taking some on soco, but i'm still looking for more locations! thanks for the help
The "Welcome to Austin" mural on South First and Annie is pretty popular. We did ours in front of the Paramount Theatre on Congress (sadly, they wouldn't let us shoot any inside), so if you're movie people, that might be a good option or the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on Sixth has a really cool sign. I actually saw an engagement session that was done inside the Ritz that was really different and unique. i think the post said that the couple just asked if they could come in and do it before any of the shows started that day.
We did pics all around town, we went on the drag, around campus, to the broken spoke, places like that. Have you ever been to Peterpan golf? I saw a great e-pic session at the Hey! Cupcake trailer. It was sooo cute. The trick is to call ahead of time and find out where it will be. Hope this helps
East Austin (east of IH-35... E 5th/4th st.) N. Campus area. Spider House Cafe (they have a website I think). S. 1st. S. Congress- lots of cute, vintagey shops.
Okay I have no clue how to actually post pictures. I am so lame. BUT we did places around town that we loved and I ADORED the way our pictures turned out. www.weddingphotos.com- click "The Blog" and we are Courtney and Tats are engaged. We did ours at Hey Cupcake, the Austin sign, A candy store and this awesomely green wall-loved all the places we chose. Have fun.
@courkiadams22 - Love your pics! We are planning to take pics at Hey Cupcake as well =)
I used to live in Austin. 6th Street would be very cool for that urban vibe. If I remember correctly by UT there are some cool shops. I would try for local bookstores, coffee shops, maybe a record store. Also any of the local art galleries might be really cool too.
I forgot to add that you can travel to the little towns in the Hill Country and get some nice field shots and go to some of the wineries there and do engagements.

I'm from houston, but I absolutely adore Austin. I've spent so much time there throughout my life, and dream of moving there one day. I consider myself pretty non-touristy, and I know my way around (at least in downtown) but i would really appreciate any help ya'll could give me. We'll be heading down the first weekend in november for our anniversary and e-session :) our photographer is amazing oldworldstudios.net
We've got a couple places to consider, one is monkey see monkey do, and the murals on the drag, we've also thought about waterloo.
we're more of a funky couple, nothing traditional like zilker's gardens (although they are beautiful) we like more vintage, indy, funky stuff, maybe some pretty fields or fun shops, cool buildings, anything! if ya'll can help me out i'd so appreciate it. think outside the box!! :)
ya'll are the best
