(stole the image from google =)
FH were at a wedding not too long ago and the couple had a non traditional first dance song and i loved it. we have never really had "a song". we kind of had "truly, madly, deeply" but i dont feel i want that as our first dance.
there are so many songs i love BUT, theyre all country. FH hates country music. but in my opinion its mostly country music that has any meaning or that you can understand the words. so the many songs i thought would be perfect for our first dance, are out.!
so, i need your help.
i love edwin mccain so i was thinking I'll Be or I could Not Ask For More but those songs are being used more and more and i want a song thats "ours" and not common. this is very tough.
i thought the song by ferras title "rush" was an amazing song but it is too slow then the more i listened to the words i realized he was saying that she was like a drug to him...no good for a first dance!
i also loved everything by michael bauble or whoever but its too fast to slow dance to =(
so any uncommon suggestions would be nice. thanks bees
I wanted country too and my fiance wanted michael buble or frank sinatra.. We ended up with L.O.V.E by Nat King Cole. Im not sure how original it is for a 1st dance but it was the perfect speed and fun to dance to- it's a jitterbug.
@Allyser: well were not really dancers..heh who am i kidding..we dont dance at all. ive only ever slow danced twice in my life. and no other dancing..thats why were trying to stick to something slow
I LOVED the song Marry Me by Train, but FI really wants Staind Tangled in You. we listen to more rock music though so they aren't fitting for everybody.
We used, "Dance Me to the End of Love," by Leonard Cohen. It's not country, it hasn't been used at a million weddings, and both of us loved it.
@mrskesslertobe: i really like both but tangled in you is a really beautiful song!
We aren't either!! We took a couple lessons and the jitterbug is easy because it is really only 3 steps and you add whatever turns and dips you want! I wish i knew how to post a video and i would show you ours. But if you do consider dance lessons the jitterbug is a quick and fun and easy!
@Allyser: We plan on using L.O.V.E. by NKC too. I like the Buble version too, but it's over 5 minutes long. Nat keeps his to just over 3 minutes, I don't want to be out there too long. I like your suggestion of the jitterbug. Never heard of it, but we were planning on taking lessons in the spring, so I'll be sure to mention that!
We're dancing to Real Love by Regina Spektor which is a cover of the same song by John Lennon. Here's a link, you should listen to it! The recorded version (the link is a live version, the only one I can find) is even more beautiful because it has a chorus in the backround that sounds like angels. If you want, I can upload the MP3 on a site for you to download.

Daily Candy Weddings just put out a list of Indy Songs for weddings today, coincidentally a song that my FH and I will be using was in there. Here's their list!
First Dance First
“Home,” Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
(Feel free to play this multiple times.)
“Can You Tell,” Ra Ra Riot
(He’s still got butterflies.)
“No One’s Gonna Love You,” Band of Horses
(Classic. To the point.)
“Love and Some Verses,” Iron & Wine
(In it for the long haul.) (This is the song we'll be using for our recessional)
“You’ve Got the Love,” Florence + the Machine
(Well, if you didn’t we’d be worried.)
Daddy’s Little Dancer
“Hello Halo,” Blair
(Once a kid, always a kid.)
“On My Way Back Home,” Band of Horses
(But only for this song.)
Get Everyone on the Dance Floor
“Ready to Start,” Arcade Fire
(That’s “Ready to Start the Party” to you.)
“I Feel It All,” Feist
(Feeling mighty fine.)
“A-Punk,” Vampire Weekend
(Aren’t they all?)
“Tighten Up,” The Black Keys
(And get down.)
“Say Aha,” Santigold
(Less talk, more dance.)
“Je Veux Te Voir,” Yelle
(It’s French for “good music.”)
“Deadbeat Summer,” Neon Indian
(Children of the ’80s gotta love synth pop.)
“Whirring,” The Joy Formidable
(It’s going by so fast; take a second to dance.)
“Drunk Girls,” LCD Soundsystem
(Never tardy to the party.)
“Electric Feel,” Mgmt
(Better than the electric slide.)
“Creator,” Santigold
(No, that’s not M.I.A.)
Wrap It Up
“Boyfriend,” Best Coast
(For the single gals, perhaps during the bouquet toss.)
“Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),” Muse
(Please don’t judge us for the source.)
“Cameras,” Matt & Kim
(The photographer’s got you covered.)
“Sleepyhead,” Passion Pit
(You can sleep in the morning.)
@vaness13181 yes you should def. try it! We had a lot of fun. I have a short video clip i could show you but i am not sure how to upload a video?!
We did "True Love Will Find You (In The End)" by Wilco and it was beautiful! Also, we were at a friends' wedding and their first dance was to Michael Bubles "Everything" and it was really pretty!
"How Sweet It Is" by James Taylor is cute and fun.
so is "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.
We did "Sway" Michael Buble's version
Were using i love how you love me... covered by Neutral Milk hotel... If we didnt use that We would have used Kenny Chesneys Me & You
@clarebee: i loved that song but it seems to fast for a normal slow dance which is all were capable of!
@eseds: i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE me and you by kenny chesney. but as i mentioned my FH HATES country. absolutely hates it. wont even consider it!now im kind of upset that ive heard the song. becasue i want it
I think we finally made our choice...
As of today (hahaha) it is God Gave Me You by Dave Barnes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7M7cJ4DydQ
Good luck with your choice! This was more difficult than table arrangements for us!
@cllyons - its definitely a little faster than a normal slow song, but it worked really well!
I REALLY wanted to dance to "HOME" by edward sharpe but my fiance thought it was too fast and we don't actually have the type of dancing skills to make it work.
We settled on Queen's "you're my best friend" -- which isn't too traditional.
@MyFavouriteChords: this song is in the running...opinions?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxhyJYpT7DM
Something in your eyes
Makes me want to lose myself
Makes me want to lose myself
In your arms
There's something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life
If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've felt so low
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you've done
Chorus: Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where
I come from
Feels like home to me
Feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong
A window breaks down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright 'cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see through the dark there's light
If you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
If you knew how happy you are making me
I've never thought I'd love anyone so much
Chorus
Feels like I'm all the way back where I belong
Better Together - Jack Johnson
I love Adele's Make you feel my love. We actually do have *a* song, so I imagine we'll dance to that. Good luck!
We don't actually have "a song", so we had the hardest time picking one! We didn't want anything too popular either, but we decided on "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton
@cllyons: Listen to this... super off key, still a love song.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISEcsPHOfDM Its the only version they have.. but we are so in love with its quirkiness
Im obsessed with country my FH is not as in love as I am... I know where youre coming from :-\ there are so many beautiful country songs
We're trying to finalize our pick tonight! Didn't want the usual so we're going with either "Two Birds" by G.Love or "Into the Colors" by Ben Harper. I love the lyrics of both. "Two Birds" probably fits us better but "Into the Colors" gives me goose bumps every time. We don't dance and we don't have a song so it isn't an easy choice.
If you want to go with a more alternative route this is what I would suggest... I'm looking at these songs for my first dance but cannot decide.
Good luck with your search!
We're doing Queen's "You're My Best Friend," which my mom wasn't too fond of because it's so non-traditional (even though I think it's super sweet!)
I also really like that new Uncle Kracker song, "Smile." You should check it out!
I'd Rather Be With You - Josh Radin
We don't have "a song" either. We are also not dancer, but this song really spoke to us.
we also thought about Mario Kart Lobe Song :"]] but you both have to be pretty into nintendo haha :"]]
@HoneyBear: I LOVE that song. I was listening to it in the car a few days ago and thought about what a great song it would be for a wedding.
Wow, tons of good suggestions!
My fiance and I totally have polar opposite tastes in music too. Thats has made it really hard to pick a song and now that we are about a month away. I'm starting to get worried. He's pretty much given up and the idea that we'll agree on a song and is letting me pick it =)
here's a link to my post with youtube videos of the two options (never shout never's 'happy' or 'first dance') that I've picked. Maybe you'll like 'em too ! they are both def. not your typical wedding songs.
