I have small fingers, 4.5. I have chosen a moissanite, and the ring I picked out is a cushion cut halo. The side stones equal to 1/2 a carat, but I'm trying to figure out what to do for the center stone. I'm choosing between a 0.85 and a 1.2 carat. I think any bigger than that would look TOO big on my fingers, but if you think different than let me know of course! I always wanted a center stone of ABOUT 1.2 carats, but since I have the halo I'm wondering if it would still look good or overbearing?

    Any input?? THANKS ladies!!

The picture attached is the set!

My fingers are 4.5 also.  My engagement ring has a 1.25 carat center stone, and IMO I think it would still look good to have a center stone up to 1.5.  Since you are doing a halo, I would think about doing less than 1.2 - maybe closer to 1 carat would be best.

I don't know if this will work, but I'm linking a "finger coverage" chart that someone posted on pricescope.

I'm a 4.5 also and have a center stone of 1/3 carat with diamonds to the sides and top and bottom of it totalling 1/4 carat. My ring looks like it has a lot more diamonds than it does because of how it's laid out - it's from the '20s and has a lot of engraving and filigree. So if money is an issue, you can totally get away with a smaller diamond in the middle when you have a more complicated ring and especially with a halo ring. Have you gone to a jewelry store to try on different size center diamonds? That would help you figure out what you're comfortable with.

I think it's very personal. My solitaire is .8 are I think anything else would look too big on my fingers (size 7.25, but very short)

I'm just not sure about this whole "i need x to look right on my finger" thing. I think that there are extremes of course.... maybe a 3ct ring is not right for a size 5 finger. but i really really think that any "average/normal" type size (i'd say .5-2) will look good on any size finger. its just a matter of what you're used to.

I really think it's a personal thing that can only be decided by you.  I'd recommend trying on different carat sizes and seeing what YOU love.

You've heard so far that only up to 1.5, any bigger than .8 etc is the max size you should go.  I am also a 4.5 and have a 2.03 ct in a tiny halo totaling 2.4 tcw and I could stand to go bigger, so it's really a matter of what you love!

@NapaBride: Do you have a picture of yours on your finger?? lol I'm probably going to go try some on soon. I am ordering mine online though and I've heard moissanite is a bit different. I'm going to research that even more though.

Thanks for all the replies so far! I'm definitely taking what everyone says into account! I love reading all of the opinions!!

my fingers are a 4.25 and SHORT. i have a solitaire (just over 1ct) and it looks big. since my fingers are thin, as well as short, anything over 1.25 looks too big on me, when you added a wedding band. one of the reasons i went with a slightly smaller stone was that the 1.2 felt HEAVY on my hand and i didn't like that. my current ring is still heavy, but i didn't want to go smaller. when i add a wedding band to my finger (i've been looking at ones no larger than 2.5 mm thick), it takes up like 2/3's of that part of my finger.

Angela83: that chart is cool. Never knew that aesthetics of center stone size of a ring can be categorized so scientifically :D

I totally agree with @NapaBride that you need to go try them on. Try on a bunch of different size stones, and see what you love! I don't think that anything is going to look silly or overbearing.

And @Corgitales--I have small fingers (4.5) and I have a 3 ct. center stone (princess cut) that looks amazing on my finger. Smile So I would even say that your range should be extended by a bit more.

I think you need to get used to the look of the ring on your finger before you can really judge. At first it might seem too big but after a couple days it might just look normal. My finger is a size 3.25 and I have a 1.1 ct center stones with two .3 ct pear shaped side stones. I think it looks really good, even now with my wedding band which has channel set diamonds in it (never thought I'd like that much bling!).

I have small hand (not quite as small as yours) and my stone is .83 and it is PERFECT!  Anything bigger would look gaudy on my hand.

I'm wearing a size 4.5 (I think I'll size down to 4.25  though, it's a tad loose) three stone ring. The center stone is 1.4 carats and the side stones are...I'm not sure, haha. Maybe .2, .3? Either way, the center stone could be much larger and still look good. Carats really aren't that big! With a halo the stones will look bigger, but even so, I wouldn't worry too much about it and just find something that you think looks good. :)

My finger is a 4.5, and my center diamond is .79 ct. It's honestly perfect for me. I thought anything TOO big would be overbearing and feel clunky...but I do think it's a personal preference.

Hello! My finger is pretty small. I'm a size 3, and my center stone is princess cut, 1.35 carats. I have a bunch of tiny stones that appear to go around the whole band (but it's probably about 3/4 of the way around) in a pave setting. I think the size is perfect for me. I agree with others who have suggested that you go and actually try on some rings. Also, just because a stone is of a certain carat weight, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look bigger or smaller. It really depends on the cut. You can have a very excellent cut to make the stone appear larger. =)

In my opinion, I would probably choose a 1 ct... I considered a moissanite also, but you want to be careful not to go too big with that, because then people might make comments.  I dont know if that would bother you or not, but if you go larger, you'll get a lot of "is it real?" comments, plus it might be easier to tell that it's moissanite if it's larger.  Again, I don't know if this is a concern to you.  If size is the only concern, I like bigger :)  But, everyone is different.  I think a 1ct with the halo would be perfect though, in my personal taste.

    Wow... I feel cheap now.

My hands are also very small with short, narrow fingers; my ring size is also a 4.5. (My hands are roughly the same size as the average 10-year-old.) My engagement ring is a 3/4 ct. round solitaire, and everyone remarks that it's a huge rock because of its size vs. the size of my hand. But I love my ring... I don't want anything that screams "MUG ME!" or that looks fake; I wouldn't want anything bigger. (And besides, my fiance picked it out all by himself, so that makes me love it even more. Laughing)

Really, as others have said, I think you need to try on different size stones and see what you like/think looks the best.

I think you have to try on the ring. Cause I have really small fingers (size 4) and my ring is 3.2ct. I was worried it would look to big, but it doesn't no one seems to think so either so it's not just my bias in loving my ring!

Another vote here for "try them on". I thought I wanted a 1ct center stone. I tried a couple on, I felt thy overwhelmed me.

Here's my .61 ct center stone on my 3.75 size finger:

My finger is a 4.5, and while I do not have a halo around my center stone, it is pretty hefty.  It is just a matter of personal preference... if it was me I would get the bigger stone.

I wear a size 4 ring, and my center stone is a .71. I honestly could have gone up to 1 carat though without it feeling like it looked too big, but I do think my small, skinny fingers make it look bigger. I also think a very thin, delicate band makes a center stone look bigger and also really compliments small fingers!

I have a size 4 ring size and my center stone (round) is 1.3 something carats. It is perfect for me, of course it is a matter of personal preference.  1 carat looked great on my fingers, and I could do up to 1.5 carats. Not sure if I'd want anything bigger.

I have a small hand also, and my ring size is a 4.5 to 5 and (depending on the designer and type of ring) and I have a larger stone for the center (2.5 cts) and on either side a 1.5 ct.  Looks great to me!

Depends on your style.   Small hands can carry it.  It's all about your wants/desires!  You decide what's right for you. No rights or wrongs with carat size imho.
