So we are hosting our reception at the Hard Rock Hotel, Chicago. It is an old building with a lot of baroque elements in it but the ballroom is all modern and grey. Love it. What theme could I use that isn’t too whimsical and romantic i.e. birds, to fit in with the mod interior?

I would definitely look for photos of other events that have happened there to get some inspiration, and then maybe post them on here so we can take a look too!
I would try to stay as closely to the theme they already have, so you don’t end up spending a lot of time, effort and money trying to get a certain look that completely opposite of the room you already have. You mention the baroque elements, so why not play off of that?
You could use dark and light constrast, and maybe try to find vintage style centerpeices like a candelabra similar to this:
And you could also try to include damask for the papers and fabrics (which you can get in almost any colour scheme to fit your taste)
In otherwords I would try to stay very contemporary and modern, with some hints of vintage, if that makes sense.

What about something a bit art deco… I think this would fit the strong colors and city backdrop without too much whismy. Mirrors, sharp edges, urban with a softness for contrast (maybe a pale pink for florals?)
Hope that helps

You do have a beautiful venue! I took the liberty of posting a pic of the Fender Ballroom so we can all see what you are talking about.
The grey is a perfect background for Art Deco or modern decor. I would just surf the net for pics and colors that you love and see what evolves.
This beautiful green and slate would make an impact in your space.
I also think that although the decor is modern, it is neutral enough that you could do anything, including Garden party, Victorian etc in this room.

oh I love the art deco idea! You could also do like a 50’s kind of theme (similar to art deco)…..lots of black and white, with pops of a bright color, milk glass…….would be adorable! I wanted to do black, white and bright teal or pink….but it didn’t go with our venue!

Thanks everyone! Ironically I researched the building a little more and it is actually art deco not baroque. Guess architecture isn’t in my cards!
Our colors are grey and pink. I was debating some candlelabras and flowers. Also found these pictures of their elevators that I may ask a friend to turn into a logo for us.
Thanks bees! I really do love the Art Deco area and am going to run with it. 🙂
