Why not just have the groomsmen wear black vests?

If your FI wants to wear a white vest and tie, he can certainly do that no matter what the groomsmen wear.

Wearing vests and ties that match the bridesmaids dresses can look a little “prom-ish”.

They could wear black vests and then a paisley or striped tie, or no vest at all.

@alg0188:  Are the men wearing black suits, or black tuxedos?  What time are your ceremony and reception?

@julies1949:  Matching the bridesmaids screams “prom” imo.

@alg0188:  If you are to follow the rules for black tie (but you can break them if you want – it’s your wedding, and pretty much everyone does) a dark purple vest is ok, but they must wear black bow ties.  It is generally accepted for the groom to wear a white vest and white bow tie, with a tuxedo, for his wedding.

In general – again, rules, if you care about them, ignore this if you don’t – black vests are the norm, but if you want to add colour, a very dark, and sedate colour is preferred.  A cummerund is also, probaby, preferable to a vest, as it is smaller and so the colour isn’t as pronounced, but, insteadm is a modest detail.  Check out these pages: http://www.blacktieguide.com/Classic/Classic_Alternatives.htm

If you really want to avoid the prom look, I would, personally, adhere to the black tie rules, including buying, and learning to tie, proper bow ties.  If your husband goes with white,
