I’m trying to help one of my bridesmaids find a dress she’d be comfortable wearing for my beach wedding in July. I’ve asked all of the BM to wear a color close to or matching DB Apple / AA Claret, and given them a minimum length, but otherwise they’re free to choose a dress they like & feel good wearing. This particular BM is having trouble finding something that doesn’t make her miserable, and I don’t want her to be miserable about her dress! So I’m hoping someone out there has come across some styles that might fit the bill for her, and can point me toward them to offer her as suggestions.
Here are her requirements & concerns, as she’s stated them so far:
1. She has a very full bust (but a very narrow waist), so it has to be regular-bra-friendly. Specifically, she’s looking for a dress with short sleeves or wide, non-halter straps and a back that doesn’t plunge too low or have cutouts that would show the bra underneath. (At the same time, it needs to be light enough not to kill her from heat stroke during a July beach ceremony!)
2. It has to be at least ankle-length (her requirement, not mine); and
3. It has to be a style that’s appropriate to a woman in her mid 30’s, that doesn’t look too young & girly or prom-dress-ish. (We went to DB together, and she expressed dismay that most of the BM dresses there seemed designed for teens & young 20-somethings, and she felt uncomfortable in them. I don’t necessarily agree about the dresses they had, but it’s important to me that she be comfortable in her dress regardless, so any tips on finding BM dresses that a self-conscious woman might consider more womanly than girly would be most welcome!)
Does such a creature as the kind of BM dress outlined above exist? Has anyone spotted one in the wild, as it were? Where might we go hunting for it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

it can be very difficult find pretty bridesmaids dresses with sleeves! i know because i tried to find some for my girls, but i couldn’t find any in my price point. one of my girls can’t wear strapless bras either, so i tried to find something she could be comfortable in.
have you checked aria bridal? they have a lot of classic styles that could work for any age. and you can mix and match; they have different skirts/lengths to choose from so you can really customize the dress. if they had been a little lower in price i would have gotten my girls’ dresses there.

how about this one from aria? http://www.ariadress.com/Desciptions/Desc173KA.htm it can be made in full-length a-line.
i second looking at aria, their dresses are almost completely customizable. prices are a bit high, but they’re worth checking out.

Depending on your price point, I have a few suggestions. I, too, had great difficulty choosing my bridesmaid dresses because for one, I have 7 bridesmaids… for two, they are very different body shapes and sizes… from teeny tiny skinny and short, to plus sized with a large bust, to over 6 feet tall!
Anyway, we loved Bill Levkoff’s dresses, but they are a little pricier than Davids Bridal or Alfred Angelo. This one in particular looked very elegant and classy, not at all like a prom dress… http://www.billlevkoff.com/style/bridesmaid-dress/679

Thanks, Bees! I’ve forwarded your suggestions & links to my Bridesmaid, and she’s excited to have some more specific search parameters than just “walk into local dress/bridal boutique & see if they have anything that fits and I don’t hate”! (And I *really* don’t want her to hate her dress — that was part of the point of letting them pick their own, after all!
@ mdglass: She’s been into a couple of David’s Bridals, but I honestly don’t remember whether she was able to try on the dress that you recommend — not sure whether they didn’t have one in her size to try on, or whether that was one of the ones that initially looked promising but that she hated when it was on. I’ve sent her the link & asked, though. 🙂
@ SubmarinersBride: Wow! I thought I’d been all over the Alfred Angelo website looking for options for her, but somehow I didn’t see this one. We had a bad experience with the only Alfred Angelo in NJ on the day that all of the bridesmaids & I got together for dress shopping & dinner, but she lives out of state, so maybe the people at her local AA will be friendlier! *fingers crossed*
Anyway, thanks again for all of your help!
