I’m in the middle of researching a trip to Costa Rica in December (the end of rainy season/beginning of dry season). We were going to go earlier because I had heard that rainy season is a great time to go because it’s so lush and green, but the more we read the more we decided we should wait. From what I understand, the roads get washed out pretty easily, so if you were planning on renting a car and doing any touring on your own that’s a bad idea during rainy season. Also, it’s sort of hit or miss if it’s going to be a 2 hour rainfall, or 2 week monsoon. I found this site to be a big help, you can put in when you’re going and where and you can see how the weather is (typically). I also found Trip Advisor to have some great info on weather there 🙂

I went in 2001 in June for a surf trip to the Pacific side-near Tamarindo.  We had awesome weather and waves the whole time we were there.  Our surf team went back the next year around the same time and I think the weather was still good for them, just no waves.  We were there mid-June as I remember calling my Dad for Father’s Day from the only phone at the place we stayed at.  Google Cabina Las Olas-it’s not fancy, but comfortable, cheap, and a short walk through a mangrove forest to the beach, plus we got breakfast and dinners included.  You could stay there for a few nights and then splurge at a resort in Tamrindo or elsewhere.  Costa Rica is one of my top 3 travel places of all times…good food, beautiful scenery, incredibly friendly people…just amazing all around…Enjoy!

Dress in layers.  That way when the showers drench you, you can peel off the wet clothes for when the sun comes out & dries off everything.  Also, take bug spray.  As long as you’re prepared, you’ll be fine!  It’s such a great country to explore.  Definitely much more than a lay-on-the-beach location.

I was in Costa Rica from June-August in 2004, and the rain mostly starts in the afternoon (2-4pm). Its pretty much always sunny and warm in the day until then! Plus, it’s so hot that the rain isn’t cold or anything, and it’s kind of nice because the water cools things down for the evening/night. Sometimes it is a bit of a torrential downpour, but those don’t last for too long (10-15 minutes) before it lets up to a more manageable rain. It doesn’t rain every day or anything either, but even when it is raining it doesn’t mean you can’t still swim in the warm ocean or pools!

Costa Rica is awesome 🙂 You’ll have an amazing time no matter the weather!
