I work in finance, and when I first started in the industry, everyone wore button downs under their suits. Now that's not really a thing anymore. Most women wear satin tank tops/shells/camisoles. As long as it's not like a PJ-type cami, you'll be fine.
For an interview I'd wear a button down under the suit. Once you land the job then you can start wearing camis and shells.
I was considering a plain, unribbed squared neck cotton cami. Does that sound too casual? I think my collared shirts weren't lining up right with my blazer lapels and it looked kind if awkward.
Too casual. At the very least, a shell or blouse in a more formal fabric.
Thanks for the feedback, I think you're all right. Ill have to try it on with done different blouses or if that fails, at the very least a silk shell. I know light colored blouses are best...i have one with faint stripes I was thinking about. Would that work or is white better?
I wore a sleeveless blouse under my suit, something similar to this: http://bit.ly/AyY6du, but definitely get something in a formal fabric (silk, et al).
I was able to keep my jacket on during the interview but if you think you might take yours off, I'd look for something with a sleeve.
@MaraBeth: I like to wear colors. My first top was purple and my second was a pinstriped gray/purple color (totally unintentional). But that's a personal preference. I prefer a bold color over white but white over a light/pastel.
It could depend on what industry you're interviewing for. I work in Marketing so colors are a bit more welcomed than in a corporate law or finance office.
I usually wear a white or colored cami under my suits for interviews. I think as long as the fabric isn't too casual, you are fine.

I have an interview tomorrow and I found a really nice, well tailored suit. I feel like it looks kind of weird with a collared blouse underneath, though. Is it inappropriate or too casual to just wear a white camisole under a suit jacket? I'm getting nervous about this interview and don't want to make a bad first impression with my choice of clothing!
