Hi Bees I need your expertise! Our save the dates went out 3 weeks ago and our wedding is in 5 1/2 months. Monday my fiance got layed off. We have a chunk of the guest list that are now former colleagues, including his now former boss, who is also the owner of the company. Should/are we obligated to send invitations to everyone?

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the layoff. This is a tricky situation. I think it depends on how upset your fiance is. Does he feel wronged by his former boss or was it understandable? I’d leave it up to your FI if he wants to invite his old co-workers and throw etiquette out the window. I’d sure as heck understand if I wasn’t invited to someone’s wedding if i laid him off!

But, I think you could reasonably send an update to previous coworkers/boss letting them know that due to the unexpected change in your fiance’s employment status you’ve had to reduce the guest list but wish them well in the future. If you do stay in contact with anyone from there over next 4 months then send them an invite.

@Americano: I like this answer. The STDs only went out 3 weeks ago, and I think the former colleagues will be understanding of the change in situation so long as they are notified fairly soon.
Bear in mind that he may need to use one or more of them as a referee for his CV, so be polite about it!
