She could do like a tapas style meal. Just make alot of finger food (doesn't all have to be Spanish inspired) and serve on small plates.
Or honesly, she could make a meat & cheese tray with rolls & sides. My shower was like this & so was a friend of mine that I went to recently.
As far as themes, I would suggest something that you & your FI are interested in, like hobbies, movies, sports, etc. Say for example, you guys love to go horseback riding; then she could make mini brisket sandwiches, potato salad, mac and cheese and other "western" style food. The possibilites are endless!
What types of themes would you/ her like your shower to be?
I did two showers last year but I didn't coordinate the food with the theme; just finger sandwiches for one and a sit down mini 2-3 course one. The sit down one only cost 50 dollars in food for 20+ ladies. The theme for one was "time" so I sent out invites asking them to please bring a gift appropriate for "cooking" or "bedtime" or "organization". I included gift tags hoping they would label their gift with it. For the other, we went with a Breakfast at Tiffany's theme and had a photobooth and all the ladies wore black with pearls. The theme for mine will be "firsts" so ladies will bring items that have to with firsts my husband and I will have.

My maid of honor is planning my shower, but she's stuck on figuring out what to do for it. Can you suggest some themes and what type of food can go along with it?
I'm not a huge fan of desserts and I'd love to come up with something that won't break her bank, but at the same time, I don't want to ask our guests to bring food (like pot-luck style).
