I’m not very familiar with the University City area. Does anyone have a suggestion for a restaurant within walking distance from the Inn at Penn– that’s where all of our guests will be staying.
We’d like something on the more casual side. Pizza, Cheesesteaks, or maybe an ethnic restaurant?

@finkybloom: There’s not much that’s good and super-casual near the Inn. The White Dog Cafe on Sansom is awesome- started off the locavore movement in Philly years and years ago. It’s delicious, and their bar food is reasonable, but I think actual dinner in the dining room can get pricey. There’s also Lemon Grass- an awesome Thai restaurant on Lancaster Ave. Zocalo is around the corner from Lemon Grass and has really good Mexican. Those might be your best bets.
Further West (only like a mile or 2) into West Philly the food gets better (and yes, it’s still safe- lots of grad students and professors live out there, it’s just undergrads who are too scared to venture past 40th street). There’s lots of awesome Ethiopian restuarants- check out Abyssinia and Dalak. Vien Tien is an AMAZING Laotian-Thai BYOB on Baltimore. Vietnam Cafe is beautiful but if you have any Vietnamese conoisseurs, they’ll think the food is just eh. As they’re 1-2miles away, it’s about 20-30min walk or a quick ride on the 34 trolley to these spots.
PM me know if you have any more University City questions 🙂

Some other thoughts are Pizza Rustica at 36th and Chestnut or New Deck Tavern on Sansom near 34th. Both are very casual. Distrito is a fun and trendy Mexican restaurant from Iron Chef Jose Garces at 40th and Chestnut, but would likely be more expensive than the others.
