@creeative1:  I think it would be okay to just not have them do anything during the reception if they don’t participate in dancing or drinking.  I can’t think of anything they could participate in that wouldn’t be weird.  Maybe your FI could thank his mother at the reception in front of everyone and make her feel special that way.

@creeative1:  I agree with pp. My FMIL does not want to dance at the reception so she’s not. I will still have my dance with my FI and father. I like the idea of having your FI say something to his mother, maybe read a letter or something like that. Good ideas, @al0818! 🙂

@creeative1:  Just do a father/daughter dance.  I have been to plenty of weddings where there is not a mother/son dance.  Her chance to shine is when (and if) she serves as hostess for a bridal shower and/or rehearsal dinner.

@beachbride1216:  +1  Your wedding is not about “her time to shine” anyway.  It’s YOUR time to shine!

I love the letter idea! he can still pick a memorable song to play in the background and even do a little slideshow maybe.

how about presenting her with flowers?

@nyCheesecake:  I like the memorable song idea playing softly in the background with him reading her a nice letter of thanks 🙂  You many not want to do a whole lot more than that as it might start to get more cheesy and/or drag on too long.  I’m not sure about presenting her with flowers, unless you are doing the same for your mom.

On our wedding day, we gave pin-on corsages to the mothers and grandmothers (and boutonnieres to the fathers and grandfathers).  I think they all really appreciated it.  The grandparents in particular were really surprised and touched.  Your FMIL might like something like that.
