What should i do? We have five months remaining, and we need to do the following to make our house livable.
- Replace subfloor
- Replace floors of cabinets
- Replace plumbing
- Replace water heater
- Replace one window
- Replace front door
Thats a lot of work. The house has carpet now. I hate carpet with a passion. Its smelly and very high maintenance. The carpet that is in there now is in pretty good shape. I want to pull it out and put down laminate wood, but that will cost me an extra $350 and a week’s work to put it down. Should i leave the carpet and do the wood while we are living there, or should i go ahead and do the wood and postpone moving in for another couple of weeks while we save the money?

@TheSpoons: I suggest if you want to pull up the carpets you do it before you move in! It will be way easier of a job without having to move everything.

@TheSpoons: If you have to replace the subfloor anyway I would go ahead and put down the new floor. No sense in outting the old carpet back if you are just going to rip it out again.

If you hate carpet, then wood is a no-brainer. $350 is worth loving the floors in your house!

Five months remaining until you move in or until you move out?
I would automatically vote for wood floors, however if it’s only 5 months I would go with whatever is cheaper.

@roxy821: five months until move in day

@TheSpoons- In that case then hardwood floors. They are so much easier to clean up and you will be much happier. If you put down rug you will only be still wanting to put down wood and it’s much easier before you are living there.

Go with the wood floor! You have (in my opinion) the time to do it and even the time to wait for a deal.
I also hate, hate, hate, hate carpet. It’s evil, disgusting, and it soaks up my dog’s fur like nothing else. You have to replace it more often than wood, and it only looks decent for a little while. Kids get juice on it, food gets squished in it, you spend hours vacuuming vs. sweeping (and it never really comes out)…
But you know all this. 😉
Yep, wood floor.

I’m the one person (so far) who voted carpet. I like the look of wood floors, but I don’t want them in my living spaces (living room, bedrooms). Kitchen, bathrooms, dining room, fine.

I also voted carpet. If the carpet is in good shape, I don’t think there is any reason why you couldn’t move in and put the wood in at a later date. Its hard to think that getting the house how you want it as a gradual process; I remember when we moved in, I wanted to change everything right away, but I learned soon that I couldn’t do it all at once due to time and money.

@vorpalette: I dont want carpet anywhere. I might leave it in my closet, so the floor will be warm, because no pets or kids will be in my closet. We are actually putting a lock on the door to it becuase that is where we will keep my fiance’s guns until he gets a gun safe. The other closet is linoleum so the only carpet is in the little bedroom, the hallways, the living room, and my bedroom and closet. Plus there is a ton of tiny glass shards in the carpet due to the broken windows.

You will be so much happier with wood, it sounds like! $350 is not much of a difference to just get it done before you move it. Go for it.
