Nah, my OB/GYN didn't have me wait for any amount of time either -
the only negative, if you can even call it that - it's not really, was that I ovulated later than I expected, so my missed period/due date was later than I thought it would be. But I got pregnant on our first try. (11 years of us together/using BC pills)
The only thing I can think of is that it might take a while for your cycle to regulate itself as your body adjusts to not being on the pill.
I went off the pill end of July and got pregnant in September. Haven't seen any down falls yet and haven't heard of any either.
My first cycle was only 23 days compared to the 28 that it was on the pill. I can't tell you if it evened its self out after cause it never happened again lol.
GOOD LUCK!!!
You were one of the gals during my wedding planning...so YAY!
Best of luck! :)
We started trying as soon as I went off the pill. As far as I understand there are no negative health impacts. *But*, you should start on prenatal vitamins now if you haven't already. Apparently BC pills sap your body of folic acid, and you need to have plenty of folic acid for a healthy pregnancy. The only downside is that it can be a little difficult to date a pregnancy if you do get pregnant the first cycle off of BC. For us it took 3 cycles, so I'm happy we started trying right away.
@skibobrown: I was going to say the same thing about the belief that BCP prevent absorption of some nutrients like folic acid, so it can be better to wait simply so your body is as health as possible.
Nothing to add although I do second those saying you should start taking prenatals except, I'm so happy another NYC bee will be TTC at the same time! Woohoo!
@plantains: yay!! IF we both get pregnant around the same time, I foresee possible mommy meet ups? :)
@regberadaisy: I remember you as well, and I'm so happy that you and your hubby have your little one to look forward to now!
Thank you so much ladies, you guys are so sweet :)
I have been taking prenatals since March, actually, since I mentioned to my GP that we were thinking about TTC sometimes in the next year. So she told me to start then. So I've got that covered!
@skibobrown: I've heard that too, that it's harder to know when you conceived if you don't have a regular period to date from. But they can figure out how far along you are based on ultrasounds and whatnot, right?
@hilsy85: It is harder to date it. I haven't been to the doctor yet. But I have no clue when my actual due date is because I never had a regular cycle... I will hopefully find out after my appointment tomorrow :)
@hilsy85: Yeah, they can date the pregnancy once you have your first dating ultrasound. Not knowing exactly when you conceived can also make it more difficult to assess if something is going wrong initially -- i.e. it can be more difficult to tell if hormones and baby's size are progressing on target. But overall, I think these aren't major issues. Especially, since like you said, there are plenty of people out there who never have regular cycles to begin with. By keeping an eye on your fertility signs, and even charting if you want, you should be able to figure out when you ovulate... even on the first cycle.
@hilsy85: Oooh, Mommy & Me meetups will be so fun. NYC is brilliant for that stuff.
My best friend is in Quebec and I'm in Ontario. Her doctor said try right away. Mine said wait 3 cycles.
Have you been taking folic acid?
One reason is to build up the folic acid for a nice healthy baby.
Another reason is to more easily date the conception. (But if you do temperature charting you will be able to tell when your ovulation shift is anyways).
But it must seriously not be a big deal, waiting or not waiting. So I say do what you feel like.
I am in baby prep mode. take your vitamins! :) we are gonna start "trying" right away. Well, not trying by like checking my temp and my cycle but we are hoping to conceive right away!
@hilsy85: my doc actually said I would have had better luck (currently on cycle 8) if I hadn't gone off BC so long ago (roughly a year).
Umm, I went off the pill and was pregnant before I ever got my period "off the pill". So unless you call getting pregnant way faster than we planned, then I'd say no, there aren't any negatives.
@lotam240: NOt sure I understand...So you guys waited about 4 months after getting off BC to start trying, and your dr. said itwould have been better if you had started trying right away? Either way, good luck, and I hope you get your BFP soon!!!
@cvbee: Yup, I've been taking prenatals since March :)
@Vegas Pug: Whoa!! That would be crazy--I would be so confused and probably just think that my cycles were wacky! Much better to be pregnant though :) Congrats!
@hilsy85: No I went off the pll about a year before we started TTC. When I told her this, she said, oh probably too much time. A lot of people are pretty fertile after going off BC.
@lotam240: Ahh gotcha! Well, good to know :)
Is there any truth to the whole "more likely to have multiples right after BC"?? I'm hoping that's a myth...I'd like one at a time!
From what I've read and studied, it's different for everyone. Some women may ovulate right away off BC and be able to get KU'd right away without any negative health effects to baby or mom. Other women take a few months to regulate their cycles and begin ovulating again. Good luck TTC! :)
@hilsy85: That is what I thought! I kept feeling like my period was coming and that my cycle was just going to be abnormal. It wasn't until like 2 weeks went by that I decided I should take a test and admit I could actually be pregnant already. lol!
The lining of your uterus is thinned out while on birth control. Some doctors suggest you wait 2-3 months while you're linging thickens.
@mwitter80: Hmm interesting...do you know, is that true for anyone who's been on BC or only for those who have been on it for an extended number of years (like 10+)?
I have a friend who got pregnant right off BC. She miscarried and blames the fact that she did not wait long enough.
I am also finishing my last pack of BC this month but we will not TTC for a few months only because my doctor would like me to take prenatals and supplement my folic acid before.
@heathaah: Yikes, that's sad :( I definitely understand her thinking...I can't find any research (very brief search, however) to support that though, which I guess is a good thing!
@hilsy85: I miscarried when getting pregnant the first month after going off birth control. My midwife stated that it is best to let your body go through at least one full cycle, but she recommends 2 to 3 to give you the best chances. There are a few other bees who had this same experience.
Your chances of getting pregnant the first month are slim anyways. Only 15 percent of women get pregnant on their first attempt and 30%-50% of those woman will miscarry.
My doctor recommended waiting 3 months to start TTC. I didn't think to ask why since I just assumed he knew what he was talking about.
@hilsy85: Yes, true. And even her doctor can't confirm anything because miscarriages happen for so many unknown reasons. But it is hard to not look for something to blame. It's just something she thinks about often, and it is tough on her.
@heathaah: Oh of course...I can't even imagine how upsetting it must be :( That's why I said I can totally understand her thinking...like you said, people want something to blame.
I also miscarried two months after stopping the pill last summer. I have no idea if it was from stopping bc so soon or for another reason (a dozen fibroids were found during the ultrasound) or another reason. But I would wait at least 3 months, just to be on the safe side. I had been told it was fine to start ttc right away. After the fact, I heard so many stories of women miscarrying after stopping the pill, so I wouldn't chance it.

DH and I are thinking that we will start TTC once I finish the pack of BC I am on. Is there any reason to wait a month or two after I finish BC-as in, any potential health risks? We don't really want to wait, and my gyno said that I don't need to wait a certain amount of time after being on BC to try to conceive, but I wanted to see if you guys had any other thoughts. Thanks! :)
