Is anybody else having a Geeky themed wedding??
My fiance and I are HUGE gaming nerds, and we feel a "Legend of Zelda" theme is only appropriate. We are however having a pretty traditional church wedding- just adding some special personal touches. For example, our ring bearer will be Link, and he will be carrying a Hyrulian shield shaped pillow.

(Ring-bearer Pillow)
Our flower girl will be a Princess Zelda inspired dress- just with a poofier skirt
.

We are also going to have a costume "treasure" box filled with princess/hero accessories as part of our picture guest book.

We're hiding elements of Doctor Who in our wedding :). For example, the colors are blue and white like the Tardis (a light blue, though, to FI's dismay), and we're going to get a cake topper that sort of looks like one of the actors. Oh, and FI's going to wear a bow tie, b/c all Doctor Who fans know that 'bowties are cool.'
Our wedding theme is:
(drum roll please)
....
....
....
"Getting Married!"
haha :) no, no theme here. We weren't willing to actually put that much effort into our wedding, haha!
We don't even have a stylish theme. If people ask, I say our theme is "drinking" because there will be a lot of it.
But I LOVE nerdy themes. I am a huge geek, but my fiance much less so.
That's very cool - I'm glad you guys are staying true to yourselves and adding those touches. My FI and I are comic book and gaming nerds, but our wedding is very traditional. (I think my dad would've had a heart attack if we included anything in our theme that included the words "superhero" and "comics", lmao.)
It might be interesting to get creative with the invites! Check these out - a dear part of my heart wants to have invites like these:

We're both huge geeks, so I am trying to slip it in there wherever possible. Our table names will be all nerdy locations (hogwarts, hyrule! hobbiton, tatooine), I really really want a geek cake topper of either robots or zombies or han and leia. Our overall theme is more simple elegance, with lots of candles, but I'm going to try and fit it anywhere I can!
Oh wait! We do have a superhero element in our wedding vows! I almost forgot - when the officiant says, "Do you take blah blah blah to take his hand in marriage..." the next words are: "in brightest day and through blackest night" which is directly from the Green Lantern comics.
It's the little things that count and that only us and a select few friends will get at the time.
Total geeky bride right here!!!
We went for more of a rustic theme instead of nerdy but Link will be making an aperance at our at home reception:

Mr. Meerkat used this to make the first valentines day card he ever gave me. =)
@meerkat: OMG, that is ADORKABLE! I love it. I would totally make Mr. Lassroyale (ha ha that sounds so emasculating) a card like that. (I just might...)
@Lassroyale: those are awesome! I had thought about doing something like this too, but for whatever reason the wedding has made my artist brain spooked! I'm having the most ridiculous time just doing save the dates. First it was a movie poster illustration, then it was an 8 bit caricature of us, and now I'm back to just fonts fonts fonts. I'm horrible at caricature, my fiance didn't even like the 8 bits I made, I was like "um, how much could it possibly look like us!?" So I'm trying to keep my sanity by keeping it simple, hah!
@Lassroyale: omg! I love that too! The only thing I want in our vows right now is "til death or zombies do you part" but now I'm thinking we might dig a bit deeper!
FI and I aren't doing a geeky theme though I was thinking of having Rock Band set up.
I think if we had gone with a nerdy theme it would have been Super Mario! Haha. DH and I play coin battles against each other all the time. I love your Legend of Zelda idea though.
@arenyth: 8-bit character art sounds amazingly cool, lol. I dabble in drawing and whatnot but it's nothing to boast to mom about. I'm actually a better copyist than artist. I totally want 8-bit character art of me and FI, heh. I've been trying to figure out a way to work in the phrase: "All your base are belong to us/me" into some part of the wedding, but it's not happening.
Well, I've got time...::thinks::
@meerkat: ohh i loooove vgcats..love.
and hats off to anyone with nerdy themes! we had manga/anime/videogame refs galore, and even the people that didn't understand it still had a good time - so it definitely works!
@Lassroyale: We try to out do each others nerdyness. A couple years ago for his birthday I made him this:

I think you have to be a portal fan in order to appreciate the irony of a companion cube cake. LOL =)
You're gonna love this: for our before-ceremony music, we're playing Hyrule Symphony! It's an orchestrated version of the music from Ocarina of Time.
@azureori: I soooo want to do this for our at home reception but I am not sure Mr. M. would go for our his precious Xbox left out with the little kids.
@Masala: O-M-G!!! I didn't even know they had this!
@sewing: HEHE I LOVED the stuff you guys did! I don't think I missed a single post your wrote. =)
@meerkat: Sweet freakin cake, lady. FI LOVES Portal.
We're hiding little nerdy bits in our wedding. Horror movies, zombies, our card box is a monster, we have Cthulhu cake toppers that I made. lol. Not one overwhelming nerd theme, just a bunch of stuff we like.
I did want to comment that I LOVE Zelda. I have a tattoo of the 16-bit sprite from Link to the Past.
Our wedding is traditional and totally devoid of cool references...except for some Marx Brothers bits we've slipped in here and there. :) I just have to say, your Legend of Zelda idea kicks ass. I know several people who would be overjoyed to attend a wedding with such a theme.
@Leatherbean: Oh! Me, Me!! I would love to go to a wedding like that!!
plus, zelda is totally wedding-appropriate. link and zelda are like the ultimate destined lovey lovey couple ever. time after time. screw midna.
@sewing: I second that. I think second runner up would have to me Mario and the Princess cause what other man would look in so many blessed castle to find one woman!
@meerkat That cake is awesome. I keep scrolling back up to get another look.
@ Zippylef: A Cthulu cake topper?!! That climbs to new heights in awesomeness!!! Can you post pics please please please! Im a horror and H.P. Lovecraft junkie and I'm way more excited by this than I should be. hehe.
We have discussed using Star Wars music in our ceremony. Nothing too recognizable... but some of the songs from the score are amazing. John Williams is a genius!!
I dont know if it is interesting but I am doing a Chinese Theme bc my FI is Taiwanese. We are also video /computer game geeks so I was thinking about incorporating that somewhere. Maybe a grooms cake
Omg! I absolutely love everybodys ideas! I feel so great to not be the only one who wants to add their own personal "geekiness" into a traditionally formal event. I'm thinking about purchasing theses for my Bridesmaids. What do you think??

@allieisasweety: If I was your bridemaids I would be STOKED! Where did you find them?
@Leatherbean: Haha. We're huge Cthulhu fans too! Here they are.

@Entangled: hahahaha "drinking". i love it.
@allieisasweety: zelda is a pretty amazing theme! ours is got a lot of music and rock roll influences...guitar as a guest book, record player as a card box, cassette tapes as place cards, trees made of 45's, melted record bowls....and theres a lot of black of coarse.
we were going to do a robot themed wedding but had more ideas for the former.
I'm just a waiting bee, but I know there will be touches of nerd in the wedding. BF and I like MST3K, Legos, Disney (not nerdy per se, but he LOVES Wall-E and robots seem nerdy), maybe a video game station because BF's friends love video games. Who knows. I have all the time in the world to plan at the moment.
I love themed weddings!! how fun!!! We're total gamers too!! But we're not working it into the wedding, but you should totally go for it!!
No we did not but we would have LOVED to! I really wanted to surprise the hubby with a sweet grooms cake made to be something amazing from Star Wars, I really wanted to order from Charm City Cakes (of Ace of Cakes fame) but alas their caks START at $1000!!! and that's for something relatively simple. How awesome would this have been???

Very cool stuff--I grok where you're coming from.
If we were getting married here where I live, we'd likely have a geeky wedding (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, some theme like that) with our geeky friends in attendance. Instead, we're having a small, vintagey wedding on a beach. I will be carrying a TARDIS charm on the big day, maybe on the bouquet.
We'll have to save the geeky theme for a big party back here at home.
@meerkat: I totally found those on Etsy! I'm thinking about either buying them or making some!
Can I just say that all of you girls make me so happy!!
We didn't have a gaming nerd theme, but we did have an ultra modern wedding with touches of geekiness (i'm a scientist and my husband is a computer engineer). I designed our robot cake topper and had it laser cut out of acrylic! The green circles on the cake are actually aqua blue, it's a little wonky because of the yellow uplighting!
@crayfish: AMAZING cake!! Not only is my hubby a big Star Wars fan, as am I, but I'm a HUGE Potterfreak and would have loved a Hogwarts wedding cake haha! but we kept it pretty traditional :)
