- Wedding: October 2013
Let me start this off with a little about us. My husband and I are really laid back go with the flow kind of people. We are young, I’m 25, and are high school sweethearts who met in Marching Band. We are Nerds (my husband much more then me)! Not only Video Gamers but we enjoy Board Games and Books and Anime.
When we talked about what we wanted for our wedding we just kept thinking that if a stranger walked in we’d want them to learn a little bit about us. We wanted it unique but we also wanted it to be a wedding. We wanted our friends to catch our little nerdy cues but it to seem fairly traditional to our grandparents and older guests.
I’ll start with Venue. I had worked in the kitchens at this beautiful country club. I knew there would be amazing food and killer view. Our venue was a no brainer.
We had many very traditional aspects. I had a traditional wedding dress and flowers and we did all of the traditional wedding events. Our uniqueness stemmed from the details.
Let’s talk about music! This is one area where we could easily show our true nerdy selves. There are so many songs from video games that can be used in weddings to give that special twist. Once again, we wanted to be subtle. At the reception we got the biggest kick out of our friends asking if they really did hear Legends of Zelda music during our ceremony.
- Our general background music was soundtracks from Legends of Zelda.
- When the bridesmaids entered we switched to “A Bit of Happiness” from .Hack//sign
- I entered to “When you wish Upon a Star” the Orchestra Version because we also LOVE Disney Movies
- After the ceremony we walked out to “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3
- Our introduction music for the reception was to the Game of Thrones Theme Song (We love the show)
- Our First Dance was to a Jonathan Coulton song called “You Ruined Everything” (listen to it and it makes more sense). Why did we choose this song? Jonathan Coulton seemed to touch our lives more times then other music. We love his songs, met and saw his concert at PAX East, and I bought us tickets on our anniversary to see him in concert. We also like to listen to him while we drive and memorize the lyrics to his songs. (Yes we of course were singing the song as we danced)
Now let’s talk about the actual ceremony. This we wanted unique and to tell our story. We had the most amazing Officiant who really sat down and got to know us so he could write the best ceremony to represent us. Our ceremony talked about how we met and had all the regular things. We wrote our vows together so we were making the same commitment, which we repeated after the officiant. Even adding our own “inside joke” type phrase at the end. We also had two readings, a close friend and family member. There was even a part about our dog Colette and how she would be there if dogs were allowed.
- Our first reading was an excerpt from Stardust:
“You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and… What I’m trying to say, Tristan is… I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I’d know it for myself. My heart… It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it’s trying to escape because it doesn’t belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange – no gifts. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.”
- Our Second was chosen Stanzas from Tim Pratt’s “Scientific Romance” (there is more to the poem but we wanted to shorten it so we picked our favorites)
If we were the sole survivors of a zombie apocalypse/and you were bitten and transformed/into a walking corpse/I wouldn’t even pick up my/assault shotgun,/I’d just let you take a bite/out of me, because I’d rather be/undead forever/with you/than alive alone/without you./If I became lost in/the multiverse, exploring/infinite parallel dimensions, my/only criterion for settling/down /somewhere would be/whether or not I could find you:/and once I did, I’d stay there even/if it was a world ruled by giant spider-priests,/or one where killer robots won the Civil War, /or even a world where sandwiches were never invented,/because you’d make it the best/of all possible worlds anyway,/and plus/we could get rich/off inventing sandwiches./If the Singularity comes/and we upload our minds into a vast/computer simulation of near-infinite/complexity and perfect resolution,/and become capable of experiencing any/fantasy, exploring worlds bound only/by our enhanced imaginations,/I’d still spend at least 10 to the 21st processing/cycles a month just sitting/on a virtual couch with you,/watching virtual TV,/eating virtual fajitas,/holding virtual hands,/and wishing/for the real thing.
- Our Vows:
I, Melody, choose you Colton to be no other than yourself.
I promise to always be your biggest fan and your partner in crime.
There is little to say that you haven’t already heard, and little to give that is not already freely given.
Loving what I know of you, trusting what things I will discover, I vow not just to grow old together, but to grow together.
Before you even asked me, I was yours.
I have and will always, love you beyond words, and reason, and all that other stuff.
All of the other unique stuff was really in the details. Here are some random detail pictures:
My Husband gave all his groomsmen Cufflinks representing things they liked. He chose “pocket watch” cufflinks for himself
My Garters had TARDIS Charms on them. (One for keeping one for Throwing)
Our escort cards were book marks that we made ourselves
Our table “Numbers” were picture frames with a picture and a quote from our favorite books, movies and video games: (guests matched the picture on their bookmark to those on the tables)
My dress as I said was very traditional:
Our Ice Scuplture was the TARDIS:
Our Cake Toppers were Lloyd and Colette from “Tales of Symphonia”
My mom had a grooms cake made that looked like Urahara’s hat from “Bleach” (My husband went to Japan and bought a similar hat and wore it ALL THE TIME):
We did a candy buffet for favors:
Our present table:
The best compliment about our wedding was when a relative told a friend who had never been to a wedding before that, “Not all weddings are like this, you’ll never be to a wedding that is sooo…THEM“
If anyone has questions I’d be happy to help and answer.
