We're getting a deck built and I was out looking at the frame the other night when I noticed a small furrry creature peeking out of a burrow under the fence between my deck frame and my neighbor's deck (townhouses). It seems we have a groundhog living under us!

I'm not sure what to do about it and I think we should catch and it release it elsewhere but how do I catch it??? I don't want to hurt it but I don't want it to be trapped under our decks either. I googled and one website told me to put a ferret down the burrow but I feel like since its real life and not a cartoon this isn't helpful. And it would leave a whole other set of issues like where would I get a ferret? And what do I do with the ferret after??

So anyone know how to get a groundhog to relocate?

I think that most decks aren't completely down to the ground.  Are you planning on making your deck touch the ground?

Yes, our condo complex requires decks to be to the ground and enclosed but my neighbor didn't enclose his on the side where the fence is as there's only about six inches between the fence and the grounf.

Hmm, I would probably call a professional pest control company because they will know how to trap it and where to take it.  If you wan to DIY, you can probably get live traps at the store, not sure where to take it then though.

You can often borrow a live trap from your state's wildlife management program (Game and Fish, Dept of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, whatever yours is called) for free.  Though the whole releasing aspect can get tricky depending on your local laws.  (Not allowed to dump it on someone else's property for example.)  The Humane Society might be another one to try.
