A quick recap of the last few days.
1) A user requested we add a board for plus sized brides:
I think it would be great to have a board for plus sized brides (or plus size issues in general). We have many wedding planning issues specific to us, and I think it would be helpful for us plus sized brides to have more of a presence. This would not be a diet/exercise type of board, but instead a comfortable place where we can share our concerns/considerations, and be recognized for being beautiful no matter our size!
2) We posted about it on the boards, and got an overwhelmingly positive response:
http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/board-for-plus-size-brides http://ideas.weddingbee.com/topic/plus-size-brides (22 votes for 5 stars!)
3) Some people requested we name the board Curvy instead of “Plus sized”, so we posted a poll about it:
New Board Name: Plus Size or Curvy?
Curvy beat out Plus Sized, but we got a number of other suggestions.
That brings us to today… we wanted to put out one last poll with the most popular suggestions.
Please vote and let us know what name you would prefer!

I think it’s a great idea for a board, but just a thought on the name — I think that someone can be curvy without being plus sized (e.g., Scarlet Johansen, Kim Kardashian, etc.). If the board is for “plus size issues”, calling it “curvy” may not accurately capture its intent.

i voted voluptous because it sounds sexier lol!!! but of course i don’t believe i’m plus sized, i believe i’m voluptous (reminds me of something you’d call a sexy screen siren lol)

I voted Plus Sized only because not everyone will know what the word Voluptous means…The average vocabularly of someone graduating in the 1950s was 50,000 words, today that number is 20,000…. *sigh* Makes the language lover in me cringe.

@rabbit: lmao very very true, i didn’t think of that at all.

I actually thought I knew the meaning of voluptuous, but it surprised me:
Main Entry: vo·lup·tu·ous Pronunciation: vÉ™-ˈlÉ™p(t)-shÉ™-wÉ™s, -shÉ™s Function: adjective Etymology: Middle English, from Latin voluptuosus, irregular from voluptas pleasure, from volup pleasurable; akin to Greek elpesthai to hope, Latin velle to wish — more at will Date: 14th century
1 a : full of delight or pleasure to the senses : conducive to or arising from sensuous or sensual gratification : luxurious
b : suggesting sensual pleasure by fullness and beauty of form
2 : given to or spent in enjoyment of luxury, pleasure, or sensual gratifications
synonyms see sensuous
I didn’t realize it came from the root for hope/wish/pleasure!

I voted for Full Figured because a woman could be Curvy or Voluptuous but also still be within the “wedding industry standard” sizes so they wouldn’t really have any size specific issues related to being a bride… and I think that was the objective of the new board. Plus Size may also work, but I think that raises more questions about what the specific definition is… since it’s a term people are used to hearing in reference to being a specific clothing size or above.

As Mr Bee said, voluptuous has nothing to do with being either plus sized or curvy, while plus sized neglects women who may not necessarily be plus sized in street clothes but find themselves plus sized in wedding attire. For that reason, I agree with prettyflowers and voted full figured.

I voted for full figured. I agree that voluptuous doesn’t really have anything to do being plus sized or full figured. I think it’s just a synonym that people like to use instead, but doesn’t really apply for the purposes of a Weddingbee Board.

- Wedding: September 2010 - Heron Hill Winery
1 a. Healthily plump and ample of figure: “A generation ago, fat babies were considered healthy and buxom actresses were popular, but society has since come to worship thinness” (Robert A. Hamilton).
I still kinda like this one…more so for its definition

- Wedding: June 2010 - Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house!
I voted for full-figured since I suggested it on the thread. 🙂
I still don’t know what category I fit into. Is a 12 considered plus-sized?
(Sorry, random sidebar).

I’d say full-figured. You can be curvy without being plus-size, or voluptuous at any size! Plus-size might also exclude some women who still face some of the same difficulties with wedding planning (samples always too small, etc.) who aren’t technically “plus sized”. Full-figured seems neutral and inclusive. 🙂

I agree that full-figured is the best option – like Spaniel said, it is neutral and inclusive 🙂

Ok, it sounds like Full Figured is the clear preference… at 49% of all votes, it’s over twice as preferred as Voluptuous (which had 20% of all votes).
Thanks to everyone who commented and gave feedback on all three of these threads about the new board!
So we’ll try out a Full Figured board… here’s the link, if anyone wants to christen the new board with a post:
