Heya! I'm originally from MA. Personally I would expect it to be a bit too chilly for an outdoor ceremony, and occasionally Oct can be really rainy too. I wouldn't want to risk it. Maybe think about finding a venue with a big open windows and a lovely view of the pretty fall leaves instead.
I'm not from NE but I don't think one week will make a huge difference. Is your reception going to be inside? My cousin had a wedding on thanksgiving weekend and it was extremely cold outside (About 30 degrees). The guests dressed warm and it was fine to be outside for about 30 minutes! As a guest I would be fine with being outside in the cold for a little while as long as I knew the reception would be in doors and I could warm up then!
I'm originally from MA...and I think it's pretty risky. October could be absolutely gorgeous, or there could be a snowstorm (wasn't there a huge one on Halloween this year?! My brother in Springfield said his college closed for a week because of it!).
So yes, I think it's very risky. Is there a way to make a back-up plan? Or is it basically reserving a second venue just in case?
@bas0587: I think outdoors in October might be a bit too cold. Sorry to say it, but I'm afraid it would be. If you do opt for it, I'd let your guests know so they may dress accordingly.
I went to an outdoor wedding in MA on Colombus day weekend a few years ago. The weather was gorgeous - sunny, crisp fall day. Honestly, i much preferred to it outdoor weddings in mid summer. It's a little risky, but assuming you keep your ceremony fairly short, I think its a risk worth taking. October in MA is just so beautiful, even if its a little chilly, it's never uncomfortably cold. I say do it. A cute idea is to have a basket of shawls for the women in your wedding colors available for those who get a bit chilly at the ceremony site.
edited to add: It was actually pretty warm at my friend's wedding. I was in a sleeveless dress and wasn't cold at all. Of course you may not be so lucky, but the weather is generally pretty good through mid october so I think you should be fine. Check out the farmer's almanac for weather on that day in the past few years and you should be ok.
Thanks for the input everyone. They do have options for indoor ceremonies in case it was too cold or raining. I've seen photos of my ceremony space from a wedding that was 10/9 and they were GORGEOUS and it looked like a nice sunny decently warm day (bride and bm's in strapless dresses). I looked up the average temp in the town for 10/12 and the mean was 58Ëš with the average high at 66Ëš. Ahhh I don't know!
Sorry to be the one that doesn't read PPs answers -- but I instantly thought "No! Don't do it!" Just because there have sometimes been warm Octobers does not mean you want to bet on it.
I’m in Upstate, NY so not quite NE but we tend to have similar weather. We were married this past Columbus Day weekend and the weather was amazing. It was 65 degrees with not a cloud in the sky. Actually, it was being referred to as an “Indian Summer” because of the unseasonable weather. The following weekend we were hit with a mini tsunami of sorts.
Everyone was constantly saying how having an outdoor ceremony that time of year was a bad idea but I told them to shove it. We had a backup plan in place so that if it did rain, or even snow, we were covered. I understand the desire to have an outdoor ceremony and if that’s something that you want then I would go for it. Just make sure you have a plan B.
Formerly from MA also. It is risky, but if you have a back-up plan you could try it! The leaves should be perfect though! :)
I got married in Canton, MA on 10/8/2011 in an outdoor ceremony, and the weather was absolutely amazing - we had the ceremony at 5:15pm (guests arrived at 5pm) just as the sun was starting to set, and it was probably around 75 degrees - it was actually quite a bit warmer than I had anticipated, and there were mosquitos! I did the historical weather research, and that weekend in October is generally still nice enough. We did have our reception indoors, though, as too was concerned about the unpredictability of a New England October! Oh, and my bridesmaids wore short, strapless dresses, and I bought them all cute matching cardigans, just in case it was a little cold - they never wore them.
I think October is the rainiest month in MA, at least in the eastern half. I wouldn't risk it. I remember one year it rained for like 23 days straight in October
Thank you all for your input and advice, everyone! We have thought it over and decided to go with 10/12 even with the risk. We have a cuple options for rain/cold so we are just gonna wing it and hope it's a nice/warmish day!
We set a date, finally! WOOHOO!
Yay!! Fingers crossed that the weather cooperates! October can be a gorgeous month!! :)
Thank you! I can't believe it! It feels so REAL now that we actually have a DATE!
I'm from MA wedding wasn't outdoors, but it was Oct 9th. It was GORGEOUS day, but a bit chilly if you're going to be outside for more than 10 minutes. Not completely unbearable though.

AHHH we are in the process of booking our venue/setting a date. I originally wanted 10/5 but it isn't available :(. Do you guys think it will be warm enough on the 12th to have an outdoor ceremony? It will be at probably 4:30PM in Ashland, MA in a somewhat open field type space facing oak trees. I'm waiting to find out if 9/28 is available in the case that people think 10/12 will be cold. This is so nervewracking LOL. Thankyou Bees!!
