Hello Ladies (and Gents),
Have been browsing through the site the last two days and I have to tell you all that I already love it here!
Thought I'd tell you all a little about my odd life and my odd engagement.
First of all, let me explain that I'm a South African girl who lived in Holland but was raised in a British community. And yes, that WAS the loooong story in a nutshell.
I am currently residing with my fiancee in the Netherlands, my parents live in France and my lives in the UK. The rest of my family either live in obscure corners of the world or South Africa.
My fiancee and I have been together for almost 5 years (living together for almost two) and were finally starting to talk about marraige (the Dutch REALLY take their sweet time). There were just two things that needed to be done:
- Before the summer he had never actually met the extended family and he wanted to get to know everyone before we got engaged.
- Number two was my Dad. As liberal as he was about most things in life, he was very traditional when it came to his two daughters. My FH needed to "ask" him first.
Well, step one was complete early July. We had a lovely holiday with my entire family there (it was the first time in years that we managed that).
Step two was in the making as my Dad was in South Africa too so my FH wanted to talk to him on day one of our holiday.
...two weeks later and nothing happened yet! My aunts were getting restless (this was seriously no secret, lol) and so wanted me to start trying on dresses because they knew they wouldn't be there when I did all the planning in Europe. I got home after that and FH is mad at me because I left him alone with my Dad all day. We were stage whispering at eachother (supposed to be yelling but we were in the house of one of my relatives). Our conversation went as follows:
FH: You left me with your Dad on purpose!
Me: No, this was not my idea! My aunts wanted to do something special, that's all!
FH: Well I'm not asking him now anyway. I'm waiting till we are back in Europe.
Me: (quite mad) You have had all this time to ask and then you chicken out?! (insert some more remarks that shouldn't have been said)
FH: Well... I asked him last night, ok?
Me: (stumped) Huh?
FH: (surprised that I'm stumped) You didn't know? Didn't your Mum tell you?
Me: No... So.... now what?
FH: Ok, lets be engaged but not tell anyone! I don't have a ring yet.
Me: No way am I not telling anyone!
FH: Just our parents?
ME: My entire family is in the next room! You know, you haven't asked me yet. You don't HAVE to do it at this very moment if you're not prepared.
FH: But I want to.
Then he got on his knee and asked me (still whispering).
That, Ladies and Gents, is the story of my strange and yet wonderful moment. Very much like the rest of my life! Hehe!
