My daughter is getting married next month, and I’ve been lurking on these boards for the past two months and finding so much help here — from etiquette to food, decor, etc. You all are so very helpful to one another, and I’ve learned a lot!
I decided to post today because I am so stressed about my dress! This is a quick wedding (she just announced in Dec.), I would say it’s “semi-formal”, kind of rustic chic is the theme she’s going with. My DH and I have six children all together (his, mine and ours) and this is the first one to get married…so we are a little stressed and confused.
Her BM dresses are “living coral” from David’s Bridal, the guys are wearing a medium-shade grey tux (not light grey, not a real dark grey), father and step-father (both walking her down the aisle) are wearing black suits. Initially she wanted me to wear a “turquoise” color — but I have searched and searched online and in stores and can’t find anything that isn’t too “young” looking or too “old” looking. I am “only” 41, and I’m 4′ 11″, pretty fit for having four kids, and fairly young-looking (so I’m told, lol). I want to look classy without looking “frumpy” or aging myself.
Anyway…after her dress fitting Saturday, we took a quick trip to the mall and I found this dress from Dillard’s. She likes it, and my DH likes it, but I’m still unsure. Would you all give my your opinions please? Also — the dress is longer on me because I’m so short, it’s actually to my knees. 😉 TIA!

I like it – I like when MOB or MOG wear champagne colored dresses. Why are you unsure about it?

@Sea_Ashley: Thank you! I’m not sure because at this point, I’m not too sure about much of anything, lol! Seriously though — I’m just not sure about the color (the color is more of a tan/light gold) and the style. Is this an appropriate style for the MOB? I would love to wear a floor-lenght dress, but that length tends to make me look “squatty”.

@MomToSix: I think it’s perfect. My mom is wearing something very similar to this for my wedding (she’s petite too) and her skirt comes just above the knee.

@MomToSix: I think that’s a very beautiful and classy dress – it would go well at a rustic chic wedding!

Thank you all so much! I’m feeling better about the dress…but I asked my daughter again last night and she says “it’s kind of plain”. Uugghhh. Any way you ladies can think to “dress it up” a bit? I thought adding a broock, but it doesn’t seem like there’s a good spot to place one…
Also, what color shoes would go with this dress? And jewelry? Again, I’m lost…

If you feel comfortable with it, shoes would be a fabulous place to bring in the turquoise color you mentioned earlier. I agree that there’s no good place to put a brooch; a necklace would also look strange with the neckline I think. Instead, I’d do a bracelet and dramatic earrings.

I’m having this problem with my Mom too. She is 59 but looks young and is fit. Everything we find either looks too young/sexy or too old/frumpy!
Have you looked at the nordstroms website? They have some cute stuff. Also, when you said turquoise this dress came to mind and it comes in petite:
I think the dress you posted above is lovely, but you don’t seem super excited about it. Also try Ann Taylor (website). Their bridesmaids dresses are affordable and some of them could be very age appropriate MOB dresses.

I think it’s perfect. Especially since it does go to your knees! Great choice!

@houstonwhodat: Thats a really pretty dress!!!

@MLDoddie: Thanks! I almost used it for bridesmaids, but found a better deal. And then I wanted my Mom to wear it but she is worried about the tiers on her bottom half. I guess I really want *someone* to buy it 🙂

That dress is so cute! I think it is perfect for a mothers dress. So pretty and classy.
I personally would go with either gold or pearls. A pearl chocker length necklace would be so cute. If you want to add turquoise, this dress is perfect. Turquoise necklace would be pretty there too. For shoes, I would probably go with a nude color. Again turquoise would work beautifully. I think all you really need is some cute shoes and a gold bracelet and stud earings to look complete, but the other things could jazz it u

Thank you all so much! You are all so helpful and I’m feeling a lot better about the dress. I was thinking of trying to bring in the turqouise color with jewelry, or maybe some of the coral color of the BM’s? I love pearls…wish I could wear the ones I wore to my own wedding, but the necklace won’t really go with this dress.
What about a long strand of knotted pearls? Would that be ok with the cowl neck?
