I would personally paint it, because I hate wood trim. But I've seen it look nice on some occasions, with different color paint on the walls, etc.
I think that wood can look great with the right colors on the wall. You might want to stain it darker, it's sort of a midrange wood color which looks weird to me.
I'd paint it. Stained wood everywhere looks pretty dated to me, and even if you wanted to stain it a different color, your only option would be to go darker. Many times they used cheap wood that they knew would be stained, and getting down to the old bare wood you'd be surprised to see how many different shades the wood is...and then you have to stain it again darker or paint it anyway.
If it doesn't bother you as is,leave it alone. My preference would be to paint it,tho.
Painting it white will also make your ceilings and walls look higher. As they are now, the eye is drawn to the wood trim, and at the ceiling, it makes the rooms look chopped up.
I really only think it's a sin to paint wood in old houses, where the quality and crafstmanship of the wood is incredible. I don't think anyone really thinks it's a sin to paint wood in newer homes and it looks much more modern besides that. That medium brown colored oak can definitely make a house look darker and dated. I would totally paint that white if it were me, I think it would really brighten up the space!
I think the problem is, as another PP alluded to, is its too similar to your wall color choice.
So, ideally you would paint the trim or repaint the wall. The idea of the trim is it complements/contrasts the wall color and gives it a finished look. Right now it just looks muted.
I would paint the trim (but don't touch those gorgeous floors!).
The brown stained trim looks very dated to me. White trim looks much more bright and fresh.
I agree the if the wood were original, it would be a different situation. Do what you like! :) And congratulations!
I would paint it white, but it's really personal preference.
I would definitely paint it. If it were larger/wider and stained a bit darker I think it would look nice not painted, but as it is it looks a little unfinished to me. But I can also see what others are saying about how that might be because it's too close to the wall color.
I think you should definitely paint it. It makes the house look a bit dated as is.
I would stain it darker, rather than painting it. Wood is so beautiful naturally, and honestly, it looks more expensive in my opinion. I've never thought wood looked cheap.
I would stain them a different color or shade perhaps, but let the grain show! Or, I would paint the walls a different color. I agree with a PP that it just looks muted right now. Washed out.
I'd paint it white. It's similar to the wooden trims we have around the house, but ours is thinner. I've been meaning to paint it but just haven't gotten around to it.
I would definitely paint it white and do a cool, light color on the walls, (like a very light gray or mauve). If the space was bigger you could get away with staining it darker but I think that will close in the walls.
I think painting white will flow better with the ceiling and make it open. I used to live in 1920s apt with crown molding painted white and loved the look. Agree with pp the wood trim makes it dated.
I agree with many of the other PP; paint it white. IF the trim were original 1940's trim and nice and wide, it would probably look lovely. This, on the other hand, looks very 1995 to me.
We swapped out all the wood trim and cabinetry in our house for white enamel. It makes every room look so much crisper and not "death by oak," as my neighbor once said. (Nice, huh?) It's so '90s!
White paint it is! I was planning on painting most of the walls a light, fresh gray so I think that white trim will definitely add to the crispness I'm going for. Thanks so much for your help, ladies!! :)
We had the same problem with our house. Some of the rooms had the trim painted already, and the rest that didnt we left the natural wood since its so hard to go back. I tired to pick wall colors that look really nice with the wood trim - sage green looks great with it.
With the grey though, white will definitely look better with it imo. I did a grey blue in the master bedroom and left the trim wood... i REALLY want to paint it white but hubby doesnt want to.
It seems like wood trim is coming back into style (and white is going out), so I'd keep it! I'd paint the walls something else though - a nice light tan or a sage green. I'd stain them a little darker though... medium-wood is kind of outdated.
@Lorge28: Hi Lorge! I've missed you! I'm so happy to see pictures of the new house!
We also purchased a home with wood trim, slowly we have been working to transition to white trim. Instead of painting the trim though, we actually are just putting new trim down. The cost is a bit more, but we had really cheap 3" baseboards that didn't have much style and were pretty basic builder grade from the 80's. We put down new 5" ones when we put in hard wood floors and it has totally changed the look and feel of the room!
If you do paint, I would suggest trying to find a painter to do it for you! Its a pain and a lot of detail work!
@Lorge28: Also, we used a paint color from Lowes called Victorian Creme or somethign like that. Its very close to white (no yellow) but not so bright white that all the dirt shows!
Definitely paint the trim white as it will look more updated. You can always add crown moulding and paint the walls a warm grey colour! Instant update!
OMG don't paint it! It looks beautiful with your floors, doors, baseboards, and honestly, I think if you just change the wall color you'll love it.
I love the wood, but since it is not original then it wouldn't be too terrible to paint it, but maybe double check to make sure. Maybe paint the walls a brighter color and then see if you like the wood better.
Pick a nice wall color you like that will go with the trim better (PP said sage green), but that would also go with the color you were thiniking of painting the trim.
That will likely solve a lot of the problems, look nice, be cheaper, and way less work. If you still hate it, then by all means paint it white. But I would mutistage it rather than go nuts fixing something that might not be broke if you change only the wall color.

Hi ladies! My hubby and I are in the process of purchasing our first home (yaayyy!!) and we're having a hard time with a paint decision. The house has wood trim throughout, and I think it looks a little cheap, BUT I've always heard that it's basically a sin to paint wood. It's was built in the 40's and I'm quite certain that the trim is not original. What are your thoughts; paint the trim white to lighten it up, or keep the wood?
