When we picked up our marriage license, I was told I could change my name to my new married name on my passport for free within one year of being married.  It's Form 5504.  I haven't filled it out yet but the link is http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds5504/ds5504_2663.html

Yes, it's true - you can and you should!  I learned this the hard way.  It's one of those things that I've been procrastinating on.  Until, I received a free cruise through work with less than 60 days notice.  There was no way I could send in my passport for the name update and get it back in time with out paying the expedited fees.  So, I ended up taking my old passport as my i.d. for both the flight and cruise (name on both must match if booked together) and also having my drivers license and marriage certificate as a back up just in case.  Moral of the story - don't put this off, you never know when you'll have the opportunity to get away! Cool

Oh crap!  Forgot about that one!  Thanks!  (Which is ironic since needing to use my passport is one of the reasons it's taking me 6+ months to change my name!)

Your passport has to be less than one year old too.  If it was issued more than a year ago, you have to use a different form and you ARE charged.

There's a link explaining which forms and charges at the top of the original link posted.

qasiaraine - You are right!  If your passport is more than a year old you have to use Form DS82 and it is $75.  The man on the phone was very polite when I complained that it isn't fair to have to pay to have your name changed.  He said if enough people contacted their US Senator maybe a bill would be passed to cancel the fees.  If I get a new passport with my new last name, it would be valid for 10 years but I still have 7 years left on my current passport with my maiden name.  I am going to contact my US Senator right away.

@qasiaraine oops... didn't read close enough. THat must be it-- I've had this passport since 2003. The fee was $75 plus some other fees. At least I didn't do something wrong to miss changing it for free. Whew! If y'all do want to change soon, I was told the cost will go up $35 more at the end of March so... get on it!

Nice!  Thanks for the link.  That's one less thing I have to research.

I just contacted my US Senator and said that paying $75 to change my passport that still has 7 valid years left on it seems like a punishment for wanting to legally change my name to that of my husband's.  I don't mind paying a nominal fee for the service, mailing fees, etc. but $75 is a large amount for a financially responsible woman.

This is only true if you bought your passport within a year, not within a year of being married.

The link to which form to fill out is at http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html

and they are thinking of raising the fees for both new passports and for name changes so it probably would be best to get yours before the rates go up.
