DH and I rented grey tuxes from Men's Wearhouse for our wedding. We didn't look anywhere else, so I can't be anymore help, sorry!
The boys:
We bought suits at Burrlington Coat Factory. They get in new stock all the time so I would check there if you have one close to you.
Express. Believe it or not. Go in when they have a coupon thing going on (just sign up on their website), and it'll end up costing you less than a rental.
Besides, a gray suit is one of those things every guy will get use out of - job interviews, other weddings, etc.
Do you have a Mr. Formal near you? They have a darker gray tux and they rent suits as well.
We're going into Jos. A. Bank tomorrow to pick out suits. We're buying gray suits, because the purchase price (around $240 probably once we add shirts and ties), was only about $90 each more than what my brother just paid recently to rent a tux. The groomsmen are paying $100 each (again, $50 less than my brother paid for a rental just a few months ago) and we're covering the rest as their gifts. I LOVED the idea of FI in a suit and I also liked that he would have another suit for other occassions. His groomsmen are all really excited about the idea and our moms both loved it because our dads both needed new suits anyway. Just wanted you to have the numbers in case you thought purchasing was too much - it may not be. Just see ifthey will apply one of their very frequent "70% off everything!" sales to your purchase.
macys, banana republic, express, h&m!! we got our as macys. there are a lot more medium greys n charcoals than light grey. it was hard to find these! took months cuz I wanted it to be slim fit.
Here they are.

banana, express, & hm have vests with theirs.
The cost to rent out here is $140. We have found great bargains to buy the guys suits instead since we want a charcoal grey and that is not available. My FI is gunning for us to buy them at Van Heusen but another bride on here used makeyourownjeans.com and I am pushing for that. Custom suits, in our color choice, slim fit for $110.00? Yes please!
I was also looking for something like this...they all told me that the gray is a spring color and they just don't stock them until 'spring season' starts in mid-February. Around then you should see many more options in shades/fabrics. I think since you're wedding is August you can wait a little longer for the better selection!
I also second @baletrina, in the end we bought suits at JC Penney (JFerrar brand I think) that were very nice and the 3 pieces came in under $120 total
i'm in the same boat. we went into men's warehouse and they are actually having a sale this month. if you buy one suit, you get the next for $100. we found a nice medium dark grey suit for only $200. we have an even number of guys so for each guy it will work out to $150 each for the suit which is comparable to a rental. all our guys were excited to buy a suit they could actually have to use again rather than wasting the money on a rental. the sale is only good till the end of this month (Jan) so thats an option. best of luck!
@misskoala: Did those navy tuxes you rented from MW have belt loops? That is exactly the look I want, but I don't want the guys to wear vests but think the suit look will be strange/incomplete without a belt.
Also, the bees that bought suits at JcPenny and Macy's, how much did you end up spending?
Why is this part of the wedding sooo hard?!
It's so validating to hear the frustration of other brides here looking for these suits. I have also been looking for a slim cut grey vested suit and CANNOT beleive that very few places carry them, especially for an affordable price. I have also gone to Men's waerhouse ans they only have that one grey tux, which is NOT the same as a slim modern three peice suit (I personally don't like the vest that you get in that rented calvin tux). Tini, I have also been struggling to find affordable suits for the guys (meaning $200 or less) since that is only about $50 more that they would spend on a rental. Express has nice options, but they're pricey and I would consider them more for my Fiance. I will look more into H&M, but it seems liek you have to get lucky to find them. My suggestion is Macy's. I was there this week and plan to go back. They are having a sale (as they often do) and if they open a Macy's card, they may get an additional 20% off so that a suit over $200 could become affordable. However, there are still very few with vests ( i think maybe the Alfani Reds). At this point, I may just have them wear Grey suits without the vest. Good luck! Right now, it's my source of stress!

I am finding I impossible to find gray (prefer a medium-gray) vested suits to rent. Men's warehouse apparently only has the one light gray tux, and similar story for jos.a.banks. I've looked into buying, but can't seem to find anything reasonably priced in a wide variety of sizes. Have rental companies woken up yet and added any new gray suits to their inventory? (specifically in the Philadelphia area, if possible...)
