@Treejewel19:  I guess we’re part of the trend because we’re doing our first dance before dinner as well. Actually, we’re getting introduced, doing our first dance, then a combined mother/son/father/daughter dance before cutting the cake and then finally opening the dinner buffet last. Once dinner starts the only thing left are the speeches and then starting the post dinner partying/dancing.

Took me a minute but… we had our dance before dinner, too. We did our first dance immediately after our “grand enterance” then the father/daughter and mother/son dances. We got everything out of the way and people could chow down.

We didn’t do a lot of speeches (Best man wanted to, my mother & my in-laws) but those all came after dinner.

I don’t care when I get fed as long as I do. I always snack before a wedding, so waiting on food isn’t a big deal to me. Plus it gives me time to bullshit with people while I’m waiting for their pictures to get done. We had no complaints.

@beachbride1216:  That; sounds pretty similar to the way we’re doing things. We’ll have the garter and bouquet toss after dinner to kick off the “party” part of the night.

Most of the weddings I’ve been to, this is the norm.  I don’t think it’s a trend.  It’s been typical for a long time where I come from.  While it’s disappointing that the couple made you wait for such a long time for dinner, I think it helps to get some stuff out of the way to have more time for everyone else to dance later.  My FI and I plan on doing the same thing, we’ll just be more thoughtful of how long we make our guests wait for us to enter and dance.

i did it and so did my SIL. can’t remember for other weddings i’ve been to. i don’t really see how it makes a difference either way

ETA: it sucks that you guys were made to wait to eat (we had just had the cocktail hour at ours and had taken 95% of the pics we needed prior to the ceremony), but it’s..what, another 4 minutes?

We plan to serve food and drinks during a cocktail hour while we take photos and the buffet is scheduled to open by 7:30pm. I hate waiting to eat at receptions too. We’re having a smaller budget wedding so I want the main parts over before 8pm when my photographer is scheduled to be done. I don’t want or need professional drunk photos of guests.

All of the weddings I’ve been to, it was before dinner. Everyone ented and was introduced, and the dance began.

That’s what we’ll be doing.  We’ll do the first dance into the father/daughter mother/son dance then have the blessings and food!

Sounds normal. Every wedding I’ve been to has been this way.

@Treejewel19:  It’s not a trend, I’ve seen it done my entire life. We’re doing ours immedietely after being announced into the ballroom.

I’ve only ever seen the first dance happen right after the entrance.  Our DJ said that it helps with the energy…to get right to it 🙂

@Treejewel19:  I believe that order is what my wedding planner at the Ritz-Carlton recommended, and it is most likely exactly what we will do.
