New York Times declares Louboutins "over" (but still loves Manolo)

I have to admit that I agree with some of the comments about Louboutins in this article.  They've actually become a bit too over the top. If I was going to spend big bucks on shoes, I'd go for the more classic and feminine Manolo Blahniks myself.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/16/fashion/manolo-blahnik-shoes-regain-it-status-in-fashion-world.html

    From the article:

It was Mr. Louboutin who most effectively hijacked Manolo Blahnik’s thunder and a chunk of his market, using an arsenal of gaud and ostentation, shoes that came studded, strapped, buckled and fur-covered and that were also made instantly identifiable by his signature red soles. (The same soles have embroiled him in a long-running trademark infringement dispute with the fashion house Yves Saint Laurent.)

Unlike Mr. Blahnik, Mr. Louboutin seemed to revel in borderline vulgarity. What, after all, is a red sole but an update on the comedian Minnie Pearl’s custom of wearing her hat with the price tag attached? “It was a chic idea for a minute,” said George Malkemus, president of Manolo Blahnik U.S.A. “You wore a red sole, and everyone knew you spent $1,200 or $1,400 for your shoes. And I would say there was a period when certain customers abandoned us and moved into that world.”

And from Andre Talley at Vogue:

Not only did “the cult of the ugly shoe have to end,” as André Leon Talley, a contributing editor of Vogue, recently noted, but unbridled ostentatious spending has come to look a lot less chic when nearly 1 in 10 Americans is unemployed.

“Fashion had to turn on its ugly heel and return to beautiful shoes,” Mr. Talley said, citing among the appealing elements of Manolo Blahnik shoes their sleek lines and absence of gimmickry.

What do you think?  Do you love Louboutins or Blahniks?  Both?

I was dying for a pair of Louboutins until he said he purposely makes his shoes uncomfortable. As much as I love shoes, I'm not going to spend $1,200 on a pair of uncomfortable shoes. That's when I said, forget Louboutins!!

I like Blahniks better. I don't have a pair, but I have tried them on. Right now, I stick to Nine West, BCBG, and Jessica Simpson's line.

I read that, too!  I have to say--I love the Blahnik Mary Janes that were featured in the article.  Very chic shoes!

Not that I would consider spending that much on shoes... both. Both designers have some shoes that are ugly (those Louboutins from the movie Burlesque were atrocious) and some that are drool-worthy.

Whatever though, I say wear what you like. I have never been one to care what magazine said about fashion. Trends and fashion all start as someone being bold and wearing or designing something that isn't in style at the time.

I am a Blahnik girl. They feel like wearing sneakers and they have a look of sophistication that Louboutins just don't.

I can't afford $1200 to be in pain.  I can get that feeling for free everyday just by coming to work.  I will stick with my DSW knock offs.

I'm sorry but I can't wrap my head around spending so much money (anything over $300 is too much money for shoes IMO) on something that, technically, gets dragged on the ground all day.  If they were super comfortable or literally flew you into work then MAYBE I could see it, but otherwise...they are just SHOES.

I LOVE this line from the article.  AMEN!

What, after all, is a red sole but an update on the comedian Minnie Pearl’s custom of wearing her hat with the price tag attached?

When I see ostentatious high-fashion branding (red soles, LV stamped all over your purse, Chanel logo jewelry) I figure one or more of three things must be going on:

    a.  It's the only designer item the wearer owns, so they be sure everyone knows just what it is,

    b.  This person is not secure enough to just look great without letting people know their stuff is branded, or

    c.  It's a fake stuff bought off of a card table in a tourist city.

@misssydneyj: Wow!  This article just strengthened my resolve to NEVER buy this man's shoes.  I will admit, I LOVE the rhinstone shoes (like the ones Carrie wore in Sex and the City 2) but I will just look for "comfortable" knock offs.

@misssydneyj: He comes off as a misogynist!  Ugh!  I wouldn't wear them if they were free after reading that Daily Mail article.

Mr Louboutin went on to describe how his footwear is designed more for men than it is for women - one of the purposes of his signature red lacquer sole.

'The core of my work is dedicated not to pleasing women, but to pleasing men,' he explained.

@Melini: I'm with you.  I just had a conversation with a colleague about logos.  I bought an LV Alma bag when I was about 24 or 25 and I carried it proudly when I lived in Boston.  Now, I'm embarrassed to carry it.  I look at it and it say "ostentatious" and "desperate" to me.

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: Exactly. I was like, wait a minute, aren't women the ones who wear these things?! A lot of men could care less about high heels. So why should I spend a grand on some uncomfortable shoes, in the hopes of pleasing a man? No thank you!

@Jeannine @ Small Chic: I thought he sounded misogynistic too.  Why would he purposely make women uncomfortable for men's pleasure?  Sounds like a sicko to me.

If I'm dropping that kind of cash on shoes I'm going Prada, Valentino or Choo.

I really hope this 5 inch sex kitten uber heel thing stops. I'm tall, I can't wear those things without towering over people.

I think all of these shoes are beautiful, but NYC streets just eat up your shoes.  I can't imagine spending that much on shoes to have them ruined by the pavement.

I don't own a pair of manolo or loubies, but I love the look of loubies for their eccentricities and love manolos for their sleek style but still full of color.  And that article didn't paint mr loubie in a good light.  what an idiot.

I do own some Choos (a gift). And I <3 them.

Not gonna lie, I still want a pair...Embarassed. But I love my Manolos! The next pair of high end shoes I want is a pair of Jimmy Choos, which I've heard are comfy.

@Bostongrl25: <---what she said!! My FH has only noticed my shoes once, and that's only because they were bright red. Other than that, the only reason he notices when I wear heels is because he suddenly can't see over my head.

@sarahbabs: Lol seriously. I'm over them.

I think I want some Gucci or Jimmy Choo heels..

I love shoes. Almost any kind of shoes. I think it's a bit pretentious of the Times to declare Louboutins "over," not that it's a surprise.

@Bostongrl25: It's not so much about the colour of the sole as it is the shape of the shoe.

I don't think there are very many high end designers that design to please women, I think the majority of them do design to please men and he's just being honest about it.

I don't buy my shoes based on a name. I buy my shoes on style and comfort so if they are from Payless, DSW or Coach (lol name dropping my shoes stores) it doesn't matter to me. I have never cared much about the price if they fit my style and and comfort level. *I have never bought a pair of $1000 shoes... I'd be scared to wear them lol.

I like the classic Louboutins that are black with the peep toe just because the red and black look so nice together but I'll stick with my pink soled shoes for now- I love pink and black more anyway and they cost about $800 less. =D

I didn't read the entire article, but that is EXACTLY why I went with Monolo's for my wedding instead of Louboutins. I tried on some CL's and literally felt like a stripper/hooker because of the crazy platform and flashy design. And I don't like it when something I own has a brand label, in this case, red sole, advertising how much I spent.

I think the days are over for CL being able to charge more just for the red sole. I think it looks a little outdated and inappropriate in such a down economy.

I probably would not even have read the article if I had the Times in hand.

I have long since passed the stage where I let anyone else dictate what I should be wearing/doing in any part of my life.

    I've never been into Louboutins.

@Aure: @julies1949: I put the "over" in quotes because I was kind of paraphrasing.  They were talking about buyers moving away from Louboutins.  The Times wasn't saying everyone had to stop buying them.

I Love Shoes and have a closet of a variety of designers based on my personal taste.  Never have been a fan of Manolo but I do have 2 prs of Louies due to some really savvy shopping.  I love Louies cause they are outrageous and I wouldn't trade the 2 I have.  I prefer Dior, Gucci, or Choo over Manolo but its all due to my personal taste.  I don't follow "The Shoe Fashion Advice" cause I buy based on what I want in my shoe collection.  Yes, I buy my babies w/ the intent of wearing over a lifetime.

I am a shoe person in general and have refused to give loyalties to one designer. If the shoe is gorgeous and I love it I will buy it regardless of the price or designer.

I simply do not understand people in all honesty that refuse to enjoy the wide spectrum of designers and availability. Why restrict yourself simply because the price isn't high enough or the sole isn't painted red?

@misssydneyj: Wow, I never would spend that much on shoes anyway but that guy comes off as a real jerk to me. Um, what woman DOESN'T look at the shoes when she's trying them on?? What other point is there??

Anyway, I absolutely love shoes, but I'd much rather buy lots of cute and comfy $10 clearance shoes than one pair of designer shoes.

@Aure:  "Being honest" about being a misogynistic douche does not make it any more acceptable.  And there certainly are high end designers that put the wishes their [women] customers first.  I'd much rather spend my money with them.

I think many designers have a love for women that comes out in their designs.  Think Donna Karen, Ralph Lauren, Halston, Kors, Marc Jacobs...the list goes on.

Louboutin's statement hints at a strange attitude towards women, IMO.  Comfort isn't important, but being pleasing to men is.  I feel like it's somewhere between outright objectification and misogyny.  It's as if we are the tableau for his product, not a user group that needs to be served by the product.  There are a few designers who strike me as being in the same camp.

I still have trouble with the idea that anyone would be willing to pay $1,200 to $1,400 for shoes, from any designer..  Then again, I've never been able to wear anything more than about a 1" heel.

But regardless, unless my shoe was on fire my FI wouldn't notice the color, shape, or anything.
