Since I am not having a babyshower, I need to buy things for my baby this summer. What are the essential things I would need for a newborn? Also, since I am supposedly having a girl, the ultrasound guy said he was 95% sure, I am still hesitant to buy girly things, but I really do want girly things. Should I go neutral for the newborn things, or should I wait until the 90 day window(that way I could always return things if necessary after baby is born) I was thinking of going neutral on the clothing for the hospital.

I haven’t had my baby yet but my SIL recently did and really the only things they used for the first few months were diapers, bottles, swaddle blankets, pacifiers and clothes. She used a bassinet for the first two months in their room. And the bathtub sling for bath time. As for buying girl items now. You could always buy neuturals and then when it gets closer buy some girl clothes. Or ask for a gift receipt. I think most stores allow more time to exchange if you have a gift receipt. You might check on that.

Make sure you have a baby medical kit with a thermometer, nose sucker, droppers, etc!
baby mittens are good too as many babies scratch themselves!
For clothes, i liked sleepers the best. They were easiest for the many diaper changes!

@starry: well, I am in your same boat (still pregnant and asking the same question). My friends and family have told me 2 things:
1. get lots of onesies (like Gerber undershirts) because babies need to stay warm and sometimes you can have them in JUST THAT with a swaddle blanket wrapped around them for the first couple of weeks.
2. the second thing I heard most was: don’t spend a lot on each item because they will ruin it and outgrow it VERY quickly. All the spitting up and pooping will be hard to keep up with so you’ll end up throwing away lots of things when baby gets big and they won’t be good enough to hand down to future children or friends.
So, I’ll most likely get undershirt onesies, diapers, wipes, a baby bathtub, pacifiers and swaddle blankets (i’ll be nursing so no bottles but i’d get those too if you are bottle feeding!). Oh and someplace for baby to sleep either bassinet, playpen or in bed with you if that’s the plan.

You could go neutral. I got all girly things as soon as the ultra sound said it was a girl. I was sooo excited, I wanted a girl so bad! When she was born the main things she needed were hats, socks, DIAPERS, bottles, pacifiers (took away at 6 months) and more DIAPERS. Those are the main things. I bought the other things, a bassinett is wonderful, I had it in the livingroom while I was awake, on the porch when I wanted to go outside, and next to my bed when I was in bed. They are so portable and great in the first month or two. Oh and with the diapers, of course don’t forget wipes 🙂

Oh and another thing my SIL used was the nipple shields. While feeding on one side the other would leak. She bought some shield that collected the leakage and so what was collected in a bottle that my brother could use to feed baby with.
