A good friend of my husband’s from college gave birth last weekend to their second son. We were lucky enough to be in town when their first son was born, so we got to meet him and dropped him off some cute GT onsies when he was a few days old.
I want to send them a card and a gift for the birth of their new son, but I’m not sure what to send. I’m guessing they don’t need more clothes since they can use hand-me-downs, so I’m leaning towards a gift card (as impersonal as that is) and a sheet of stickers for the older son so he doesn’t feel left out.
Should I send a generic Visa giftcard or a store specific card (which one)?

I think a store specific card, but something like Target so it doesn’t HAVE to be used on baby stuff. It’s so nice of you to send a gift!

@abbylyn: I agree with this.
A Visa gift card I think is better suited to someone really close to you. While they are all gift cards a Visa card is more like cash and less personal than even a store gift card.

@ThreeMeers: Yep, I agree with target…plus they have the CUTEST gift cards.
Stickers for the big brother is such a cute idea.

@ThreeMeers: and OP! :Visa gift cards usually have setup fees and a whole host of other limitations, don’t they? I’d rather give someone a gift card where the whole $ amount is usable….and who can’t exhaust a gift card at Target, haha?

If you don’t care paying for a setup fee for the Visa card (it’s usually at least a couple of dollars), then I would go this route. For example, I’m currently PG and a lot of the things we bought are not at traditional retailers (e.g. BRU, BBB, Target). Aside from Amazon, there wasn’t really a single place that sold everything on our list.
So if they’re into online shopping, I think Amazon would be nice because they can get everything from toys to books to diapers/wipes. Otherwise, I would pick Visa because they can use that at any place that accepts CC.

Similar situation here. We just called our friends to congratulate them and asked for their preference. If they won’t give you one, I’d say a store specific card. I know VISAs allow you to go more places, but I still run into places that won’t let me use those. So irritating! Just pick a store that you know your friends have close by.
I just did this, but I’m not getting a gift card. I’m buying them much needed items that they don’t have time to go to the store for. My friends only live 30 minutes away which makes that easier.
Don’t worry too much about it though. It’s sweet that you plan to do anything at all, and I’m sure they’ll appreciate whatever you decide.

I vote target because target is amazing. I also heard their brand of diapers is actually pretty awesome too lol. I don’t know for a fact but hey, lol. Works!

@SuperDuperBrit: My sister has a 22 month old boy and LOVES the target brand of diapers! She says they are sooo cheap but work very well!
Sorry to threadjack, but to OP I think Target or amazon is a great idea! Also love the sticker idea!

Target gift card. As a person who works retail, I can tell you that Visa gift cards can be a nightmare for many customers.

@lilbluebird: I agree with the Amazon idea. I have bought SO. MUCH. STUFF for the baby on Amazon, because it’s so convenient to have it delivered to my door instead of having to actually go out in the car and buy it in person. I mean of course you can do that with Target as well, but Amazon has better selection and free shipping for people too frazzled to leave the house 😛
Target gets second place vote though!

@crayfish: I think you read my post wrong or I didnt write it as clearly as I could have. I am agreeing. a Target card was what I was voting for.

If you choose to not give a store-specific GC, give a cheque.
Another option is a mall gift card, if there’s one with appropriate stores that would be convienent to them.

Forget the gift card… cash is accepted everywhere!
