Newborn hiccups all the time?

Babies usually hiccup when they’re cold. Is he swaddled and have enough clothing on? My new Grandaughter had the same thing just yesterday, ironically after I told them about the hiccups. They thought I was joking. Sure enough, they wrapped her up tight and they were gone in minutes. Try it. It works.

There could also be other causes like getting too much air while feeding by breast or bottle (but less with breast) and even needing to burp more often. It seems to be pretty common, but as long as he doesn’t seem distressed by it and is keeping his food down and having the right amount of soiled diapers, he should be fine.

Breastfeeding will help with this (if you are).  I was surprised when the nurse told me that, but it does help!

@Sunshine09:  Hiccups are very common in newborns.

The only reason breastfeeding can sometimes help is that babies hold their breath, which is the same way adults can try to stop spasms of the diaphragm.

Haha as a midwife I get asked this question at work all the time! Hiccups are normal in babies and a lot of babies hiccup in utero too. It’s not harmful and it usually distresses the parents more than the baby.

@Schatzie821:  That helped DS in the past when I breastfed him most of the time. The other thing I tried was making like I was trying to burp him.  I don’t remember if that ever helped or not.

Ahhh, my little guy gets hiccups too (just like he did in utero).  he seems fine but I want to stop them for him as soon as they start.  I did notice bf helps…. but he tends to get hiccups after a feeding and after I burp him.
