So I am a newbie to this whole wedding business, been engaged for about 2 days now, and I am so excited to start planning a life with my best friend! However, I am scared that I may be jumping the gun, or planning too soon. We are not getting married for another two years, but I feel like it would be best to begin looking at dresses, venues, etc before my fiance and I get busy again with school, jobs, and whatnot. How long did you wait to start planning your wedding, and what did you start looking at first? Just need some words from the wise as my fiance and I begin a new, exciting chapter of our lives . Thanks!

Congratulations and welcome to the bee 🙂
I started planning 2 years out, and I am glad I did. I did a bunch of DIY stuff, and now I am almost done, so I will be able to relax in the couple of months left to our wedding. In my opinion, once you have your vision, it is never too early to start planning. You will also find you can lock in prices with your vendors when you book early. Prices almost always go up with each new year.
I would start by setting a budget and by picking a couple of dates, and then look for your venue. Once you have your venue, you can start looking for your gown. Project Wedding has a ton of good planning tools. They have a budget calculator that you can plug in the amount you want to spend and then you can modify it as needed. I also suggest making a tentative guest list, a vendor list, and a DIY list. That way you can check things off and add or delete as you go.

Congratulations!! We knew we didn’t want a real long engagement. So once we were engaged I made him sit down with me and pick a date. Once we locked that in we began looking and scoping out venues. The only thing I would warn you about is picking out a dress TOO soon…you might end up getting major dress regret – I wouldn’t get a dress any earlier than a year from your wedding date, but that’s just my opinion. Also, I changed my mind a ton of times regarding decor and colors…so before you do start on DIY decorations, etc., be sure the colors you pick are FOR SURE the colors you want. Just a few helpful tips 🙂
Have fun planning!

Welcome, congrats and happy planning!
As per usual, noritake22 has excellent advice! I agree that it is not too early to make some headway. I would work on the big items first; date, venue, ceremony location etc. Enjoy this time!

Thank you all sooo much!! I have definitely started working on my color(s), theme, and will be looking at a few outdoor venues during the spring! LOL planning this is so much fun, and we are going to be discussing a date this weekend, so we should be alright for now! I have to say though, it is HARD not to start looking for a wedding dress! LOL! Like, I want to start looking at dresses now, even though I really would regret buying one so early in the game. So I have decided to just tackle the items (venue, colors, date, etc) that you all have suggested, and enjoy just being engaged for a while. I am in no rush (…he is just a lil bit lol we hate not coming home to one another) and want to enjoy being engaged to my better half . Thanks again, and hope everyone has a safe as well as enjoyable New Year!
