My OB told me that most standard latex paints today have a low enough VOC content that it really isn't a big deal as long as you aren't locking yourself in a closed room and I was welcome to help my DH. We went with the Sherwin-Williams Duration paint for the nursery and I look forward to painting tomorrow. We've been doing a lot of home improvement including a bathroom remodel that I've been around.
Um, you're pregnant?! :) Congrats! (I'm a regular blog follower.)
As for paint and just about everything else, you get a million different opinions. One blog I like is this one: http://pregnantchicken.squarespace.com/blog-archives/
@candicemcc:oh, yea, right, SSSSSSHHHHHH. I'm only five weeks (six next week) and we decided not to tell our families until Christmas, so mum's the word. Well, except I told some bee friends and posted here earlier asking when people tell their workplace and pretty quickly dropped the hypothical, "See, I have this friend...." :)
OHMYGOD so many opinions. SO many. I'm sticking to only a couple of pregnancy books so I don't have to mediate between too many conflicting opinions (one by Mayo, and Body, Soul, Baby - which is awesome) but just figuring out if I can paint with no-VOC paint is driving me batty! Thanks for the blog link.
Ahhh, congrats!!!!!! I'm a blog reader too... so happy for you! I've loved following your blog, as I feel like we are in the same stages a lot of time. Except I'm a few months away from starting to "try" to have a baby. But have felt the same way as you... recently ready to start thinking about it! LOL!
You should be fine, but if you are going to help, I would wear a mask just in case. The masks are sold at the same place you get your paint. About the eating, when I was pregnant, I ate anything that I felt like eating and my kids turned out just fine. Honestly, if I saw all the commercials about the bad things for pregnant and nursing moms that are on these days back when I had my kids, I would have been too afraid to have any kids. As long as you use common sense, you will be fine.
We used the Home Depot's low-VOC brand, I think it's called Fresh Aire. Anyway, the doctor said that was fine, but if the fumes make me feel nauseous, I should wear a mask.
I personally wouldn't be comfortable painting with anything but zero-VOC paints while pregnant. We used Mythic paint for our nursery and you couldn't smell anything. The furniture we bought had more of an odor than the paint!

I'm driving myself a bit crazy trying to figure out if I can help my husband paint our second house. We are *so* close to finishing the thing and putting it on the market, but there's a (new) second bathroom to be primed and painted, plus touch-up work needed on the bathroom and kitchen.
Is low/ No-VOC latex paint fine, or no? I'm curious to hear what your doctors told you versus all of the stuff I'm finding as I research online. I'll call mine tomorrow.
Yeesh. I'm a week into this and feeling like suddenly the world is a rather dangerous place. At our Christmas Block Party yesterday, I stalked the other pregnant woman so I could just eat what she ate (this is her second child - but we haven't told anyone, so I couldn't ask)!
