We are thinking of going to Nice for our Honeymoon, we've traveled along the coast (by train) but never stayed there, and also it was in August.

Anyone have any thoughts? Have you been there? I'm also worried about the weather (in June).. I want to sit on the beach some at least 4 out of the 7 days we will be there, we might do day exscursions a few of the days but since we've been to paris, we are trying to stay away from there. Any recommended day excursions?

I went to Nice in November so I can't tell you anything about the weather in June - but we did a day trip to Monaco. It wasn't a long drive (or possibly train ride?) but it was beautiful.

I went to Deauville and HonFleur last February.  They are little coastal towns in the Normandy region. . . maybe you've already been but I loved it.  Cute and quaint and well taken care of towns. Clean fresh air and friendly people. Lots of little shops and restaurants and a paved walkway to walk along the coast. We even talked about how it would be nice to retire there.

I imagine it will be humid in June.

I went to Nice in June with my fiancee about 2 summers ago. The weather was very nice and I really enjoyed Nice. However, the things I loved about it sound a bit different from what you are maybe looking for. I loved wandering around the city, the flower market, etc. I also really enjoyed doing day trips from there. Definitely our best day was when we rented a car and drove up into the small hill towns of Nice Hinterland - absolutely stunning. You can also do other easy day trips by train - Eze, Monaco, Cannes, etc. We also loved visiting nearby fishing towns like Villefranche. We found a great beach that was deserted on Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat, where we sat all by ourselves and had a romantic picnic and bottle of wine, taking in the gorgeous scenery and the mediterranean. However, the beaches in Nice were quite crowded and I found them a bit dirty (plus, you know they are pebble/stone beaches, right? It's not sand?). I liked strolling the beach and we did lay out one day but I personally wouldn't want to spend 4 of my 7 days on the beach in Nice. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't go there for a honeymoon, I think it would be wonderful - but if you want more than half of your time to be laying on the beach, swimming, etc., I might try somewhere else. Just my 2 cents! Good luck planning. I am sure that, wherever you go, you will have a fabulous honeymoon! :)

I studied abroad in Rome and spent 2 weeks in Cannes/Nice. While it is beautiful, I wouldn't consider it the best beach town. The beach in Nice is all rocks and it is right off the downtown area so it isn't very romantic. You may find a hotel along the coast (a little outside of town) that has a nicer beach.

I also went in June and it was HOT. Make sure your hotel has Air Conditioning.

As far as excursions, I would HIGHLY recommend going to Monte Carlo. It is a fascinating country and absolutely breathtaking.

I was at a conference in Villefranche-sur-mer, which is right next door to Nice, in June 2007.  The weather when I was there was warm and clear - the Mediterranean was still quite cold to swim in, but the beaches were lovely.  You can spend all day looking in quaint little shops up and down the coast.  Monaco is about a 30 minute train ride away (I didn't get off the train there, but I can report that they have slot machines in the train station).  It would be an awesome place to go on honeymoon!

Thank you guys so much! We never went to the beach at Nice, just Cinque Terre which is here nor there. Ugh... this honeymoon thing is so hard, we have been going back and forth for almost every damn place in the world.

And thank you so much for recommendations, if we will go we will definitely have to check these out.

I was suppose to stop in Nice on a cruise.  The winds were too high so we went over to Toulon instead (just West of Nice).  LOVED IT! Beautiful area on the coast.  We had some lovely french food in a mom and pop bistro.  I would love to visit France again.

I'd look into some of the smaller cities on the riviera. Juan-les-Pins is amazing and very quaint with a gorrrrrgeous beach.

I went to Nice in late June and it was good beach weather.  However the beach is pebbly and so you need a chair to lay out on and teva type sandals that you can wear into the water without them salling off. The water is gorgeous though as there isn't sand to make it murky.  I agree on picking a small town with sandy beach if beach is your priority.

We spent a long weekend in Nice last August.  It was warm and sunny everyday.  We went on an excursion to Monte Carlo - remember to take your ID with you if you plan on going into the famous casino.

@billieUK:  Yes I second Monaco!  We also took a side trip just across the Italian border (matbe 20 min into Italy) but there wasn't anything too interesting without traveling farther than we did.

I was there mid-May about 10 years ago.  It was somewhat cool and windy - we wore jeans and never contemplated changing to bathing suits or going in the ocean.  We did a 4 day weekend trip across France to Lyons, Nice & Monaco.  As college students, I didn't bring "nice clothes" that's required to get into the casinos in Monoco (just shorts!), but I imagine you wouldn't forget that on your honeymoon.  We happened to randomly be there over the Grand Prix so we saw that instead on a rocky hill.

@TopazWedding:  I loved Nice.  It is expensive though.  People were dressed very well.  I enjoyed the market.  Overall, I was there in college, and it was a bit too upscale for my backpack, back in the day, but great shopping and places to eat.

I agree that the rocky beaches are not the best to spend several days on, but I love the south of France!  I spent a few days in Nice years ago in early July and it was perfect beach weather.  I did an ambitious Provence/Riviera trip with my girlfriends a couple of years ago in August and it was pretty hot - definitely needed rooms with AC.  We did Provence (Avignon and Aix) before traveling along the coast.  We stayed in Bormes-les-Mimosas for several nights and that was amazing, it would be a perfect honeymoon spot.  We took a ferry to St. Tropez for the day before heading to Nice.  We wanted to visit Villefranche-sur-Mer and Eze but ran out of time.

We did a lot but it really didn't feel rushed. It worked for us to rent a car and I was surprised at how quickly we were able to get from place to place.

Nice was my favorite city in France. I went there in July for two days. We spent an afternoon in Monte Carlo/Monaco which I loved. Nice was so nice to walk around cute little cafes with crepes and gelato. The beach was very difficiult to go on and of of so many rocks. Once you get in the water you have to be deep enoguh so you can't stand so your toes won't be cut by rocks.
