- Wedding: June 2013
Ok ladies. I’ve been holding this in for the past 4 months but now I’m letting loose!
In April 2012 my wonderful FI proposed with a gorgeous halo rubellite and diamond ring, that we built together. I LOVED this ring, loved it, and the stone was one that I spent 2 months searching and researching before I found the perfect one.
4 months after the proposal, and taking very good care of the ring (on a special holder for sleeping, showers, etc) and my FI and I notice that the stone had gotten VERY loose in the setting. Like, he saw it move when it shifted. So we took it into the jeweler, and they were like “oh that is normal…but we’ll tighten it for you anyway…” I remember thinking then, uh 4 months of careful wear should not equal a loose stone. But I figured, ok, whatever, this will also be a good time to get a sizing bar put in.
1 week after I had it tightened… the center stone was loose AGAIN. Also the area where they had soldered on the sizing bar had discolored badly and the ring was pitted with corrosion in areas.
So we took it back AGAIN. The jeweler was then like “well the prongs are not strong enough for the size of the stone, that is the main problem”. They offered to make it right, either by refunding our money, ‘repairing the ring’ themselves, contacting the company for a possible replacement, or having a custom in-house CAD re-do of the ring. They really upsold the option of the jeweler having a custom CAD re-do of the original ring with stronger prongs, and also gave us a 10 week turn around time period on this, so we went with this option.
Fourth visit we find out that the supposed in-house CAD was actually outsourced a few states away. I’m promised that my ring will look only slightly different than the original and barely any bigger.
Fifth visit. The wax model looks bigger than the original ring and slightly different, and I mention this to the jeweler. He says it won’t really be bigger than the original, after polishing, blah blah blah. I’m uncertain, but hey he does this for a living, so I go with it.
Sixth visit. New ring is made, center stone reset in new ring. Ring is completely different than original, and the size is about twice of the size of the original halo. My center gem is set so low in the setting that the color is all but killed. Ring is also twice as heavy as original ring. I’m in tears. We are also told on THIS visit that we should have never been sold the original ring because it was too small for the stone. Um. WHAT? Your floor manager sold us a ring too small for the size of the ring, your jeweler set it, and you appraised it and NOW you are telling us that the original ring was the problem?? Not the strength of the prongs but the actual ring itself? I tell them the new ring is not correct, not what I was expecting, and certainly not everything they had implied and said it would be. They promise to redo it.
Cue 2 months of emails to work out details. Takes 1 week for the CAD artist to make 1 small change. Emails with more than one change are ignored. Some requested changes are never made. Jeweler presses me to make a new mold. So… New mold was made.
Seventh visit. New mold arrives. Check over mold against original ring. Still not right. Ask for more changes, as this was supposed to have been an exact re-do except for stronger prongs. Jeweler is like “not sure if we can do anymore, you are now wasting our money..” and I flat out burst into tears. The jewelery store is 1 hour away from our house, each way. Its now 4.5 months until my wedding, and for the last 4 months I have had NO ENGAGEMENT RING. He promises to make two more changes (one of which I had requested already and nothing had been done).
1 week goes by. I email, asking for an update. No response. 2 weeks go by, my FI calls for an update. Finds out that they have refused to make any more changes on the CAD drawing of the re-do, and have sent a refund check back to us, along with my center gemstone. We are not pleased, but at least they refunded our money. I’m sad, because, hey, 4 months spent with no e-ring and now I have to start over again looking.
We get the package and refund check. Open the package for the center gemstone. My FI looks it over and gives me the bad news….ITS HEAVILY DAMAGED — FRACTURED!!! He tells me and I’m just devastated, crying.
He calls them immediately, and tells them they sent back our property damaged. They say “oh it couldn’t have happened at our store, it must have happened during transit.” And I’m thinking, I told them so many times to be careful with it, and they were like “oh it will be fine with us, we have insurance, nothing will happen to it”.
We are going in tomorrow for ANOTHER visit to show them the damaged stone. I’m hoping for the best, but at this point after dealing with this store for so long and getting a constant run-around and non-responsibility for their errors, I’m expecting the worse.
So here I am, 4-5 months of not being able to wear my Engagement Ring, and 4 months away from my wedding I A) have to find a replacement stone for a hard-to-find gemstone B) have to find a new e-ring setting and C) need to find a wedding ring (which I was putting off until I got the new ring). and D) I need to deal with this stupid jeweler again! ARGH!
This has been such a nightmare experience, and just seems to getting worse and worse!
