Hubs and I are laughing because of the ridiculousness of this situation. As most people who have been here for awhile know, we are not having kids. We are also avid freshwater fish people, and always have at least one tank going at all times. We have 3 tanks, and have at times had all 3 going, which I think we will have to do again soon.

Let's first start off with the fact that a few years ago, we got 2 itty bitty red bellied pacus, and a blue lobster (just 1) to start another tank. Soon enough, we realized that we had a female lobster, and got babies. Over the course of about a year or so, we got no less than a thousand babies (probably more) because they kept breeding with each other. Worked for us, because we got free food for the pacus once they got big (we had separated them by this point).

Well, we just got 2 green terror cichlids about a week ago, a male and female, and thought it would be cool if they eventually had babies. Well guess what? There are eggs in one of the tubes we have in the tank!! Now, we have to move the mom and babies to one tank, and the dad to another all by himself (they get mega aggressive and will eat the babies once they start hatching - I have seen him get into "fights" with the mom over the eggs already).

Anyone else think its funny, or just us?

Fellow fish lover here!! We as of right now (as of recent) have one male platy and now 5 female platys. So I know we will have babies VERY soon. Haven't had babies in awhile. We'll see what happens now that we have a male platy and so many females. He seems to be enjoying all of them!! haha

Your fishies sound awesome! We just have community fish-male guppies, platys and Hoover, our pleco. :)

@Jenn23: yeah, we also have a black knife fish as well, and he is by far the coolest fish. And the pacus (we called them one pac and two pac, lmao) got almost a foot long each!! We had them in a 60 gallon tank with just them in there, nothing else. We could put our hands in the tank and pet them, and they ate all kinds of veggies as well as the baby lobsters. They were so big when they died, that hubs had to take them to the creek and send them off to sea cuz they wouldn't fit down the toilet!!

So, right now, we have a pleco we've had for years, the knife fish, both cichlids with the eggs (I am really hoping that when we move them tonight, the eggs don't wash away??!!) and 2 snails in the 60 gallon. We are moving the mom and babies into our 20 gallon, and I guess dad will go by himself into the 10 gallon we have, at least for the time being. We are going tonight to get some angelfish to put in with the knife fish, pleco and snails

Let me know if you have babies, I want pics for sure!!

You have an awesome variety! We had a saltwater, but had so many problems after a few months, (Read: they all eventually died) so we went back to freshwater. But we did have a clownfish, angel and an awesome shrimp, plus hermit crabs. I LOVE saltwater tanks! Someday, we'll try again. I hope the babies make it with the transition tonight. Good luck! :)

@Jenn23: I am so nervous! We are going to our local fish store tonight when hubs gets home before we make the change, and are going to ask their opinions on the best way to go about moving them. I am thinking that closing up the ends and just transporting the water and babies together will be best.

As much as I LOVE saltwater fish, I don't think we would venture into that territory until we got a bigger house. I really want a circle tank, and its so much upkeep and fickle, I don't even want to tackle something like that until we have a lot more room, and can really afford it

@panterapeach: I love it! I can't wait until we get some more funds so we can get a 100 gallon to go along with it. And its really cool that we can bond over the fish, hubs and I can spend so much time at the aquarium and just walking around the fish store. We have had so many different kinds of fish, some successful and some not, but its a really great hobby, and once you figure out what works together and what doesn't (and get fish from a reputable supplier, since it seems like we have had fish die when we get them from less reliable places) its not really expensive upkeep at all

So here is our current set up. The knife fish is inside the castle, and actually just a little bit shorter, he's gotten really big! And that's why its on its side. The dad is somewhere, but in the bottom right you can see the mom in the tube

Ooooo I love fish pics! Here is my baby, my 110 tall planted tank. Right now it's in shambles since I haven't had time to trim/dose it correctly lately and I'm thinking a scape overhall is on the horizon. Here's a photo of it at it's former glory.

We used to have a 180 gallon saltwater tank.  After years and years, my dad decided it was too much work to maintain and took it down.  It's in storage.

Right now we have a 20 gallon tank.  We have a few neon tetras and a crapload of guppies.  We have had mollies, guppies, and swords in the past, and they have had a few babies, but most of them would die before they made it to adulthood.  Not sure what is different about these, but we started with a few females and two males, and they have since had several generations.
