I just started a position at a university, and I found out that there is no casual Friday!! We are not allowed to wear jeans at all. I'm thinking of wearing gouchos or cropped khaki's on Friday, just so I can wear something besides business attire.
What do you think?
My company doesn't do casual Friday either, but I don't mind. You get used to it after a while. Some places prefer a more professional atmosphere all the time, and I can see a university being one of those places. I guess if you can get away with something slightly more casual, so long as it's not breaking dress code, go for it.
Honestly, I have never worked anywhere that actually had casual Friday.
I've been out of college for six years and I've never had a job with casual friday. My current job is business casual summers, which basically just means we don't have to wear suits from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Honestly, I can't imagine wearing jeans to work in an office setting. Eik! I've only worn jeans when I worked in food service.
I've worked in an office for almost 8 years, and I've never not had casual Friday. So it's a bit of a shock to me,
My reaction to the title was "well, Casual Friday isn't a given", but then you said you worked at a university, and I'm like, wait, isn't every day casual? I guess my university is a bit more relaxed. Dress pants can be super comfy, though, if it's any consolation!
I can understand the surprise. The offices I've worked in have all had casual Fridays.
I just started a new job at a university lab and I get to wear jeans every day now. Yay! Because I don't like business attire.
We are allowed to wear jeans daily where I work (unless we have "visitiors", but they tell us ahead of time) and as long as they're in good shape wiith no holes... We just can't wear sneakers until friday and the weekend.
I'd test it out first and see how other people dress on Fridays; in my office, gauchos would be frowned upon. Some offices, wouldn't care. See how other girls dress and mirror them!
Every place I've ever worked has had casual Friday. I'd be so bummed without it! My husband is allowed to wear jeans to work every day and he works in an office job
we don't have it, but the dress code is pretty casual to start with. I wear (nice) jeans pretty much every day.
I've never worked anywhere that does casual Fridays, and it doesn't really bother me. For me one of the best things about coming home after work is being able to take off my business attire and put on my regular clothes; that's when I feel like, "Yay, I can relax now!" It's like symbolically stripping off the work day/week, lol.
We don't have casual Fridays at my office either. I don't think its a big deal. I used to work in retail and I'm the opposite of you I hate khaki pants in fact I can't stand khaki anything now and the day I stop working there I threw them all out.
I like the fact that I don't have to wear uniforms and I like that i can inject a bit of my stlye into my clothing even if its business wear. I think you should be careful because it will look bad if they have to pull you aside to speak to you about your clothing. I wouldn't push it, unless you notice other people doing it without any issue.
Yeesh! I love that my office is casual dress. My team is on the paper pushing side so we don't interact with the clients. Hmmm if you want to see what you are and are not allowed to wear, why not see if HR has a written dress code? It should give you some sort of idea of what outfit would be pushing the envelope.
We have this rule too. I've always dressed down from normal, but never jeans. The one time I broke this rule was December 30th when I thought I'd be the only one in (I was the only one in my group in that week). The looks I got from upper management made it clear jeans, a hoodie, and Uggs were not appropriate.
Yeah, I work in a university-affiliated medical center and we don't have casual friday. Gauchos and cropped pants would both be breaking the dress code. And I am with @linguo42, it always feels good to take off the business stuff. It really helps delineate work and casual time.
I have never had a corporate/professional workplace that had a casual friday.
And in my current job, the uniform is supplied and very restricted. But I am proud to wear my uniform, and love the position I am in.
Our organisations motto is "one team, many players" and I am proud to be a part of that team.
What do you do at the university?
I work for one too, but in a research lab... casual all the way unless there's a patient that day :)
It surprises me a bit since you're on the West Coast. I work in legal and luckily for a California based "lifestyle" firm -- we get casual Fridays. If i was in a branch office a New York/Boston/Chicago etc firm, even my Mon-Thurs clothing probably wouldn't cut it. :)
I'm an admin in the carpenter shop at a university. I'm seriously the only woman in the department.
Anyway, I had asked the woman who had this job before me about casual Fridays, and she said she was never allowed to have them. But I asked my supervisor, and he said I could, as long as I wasn't in ripped jeans. Yay!
I dress very professionally every day (I even wear nylons!), but on Fridays, I like to go directly from work to weekend. Driving home and then changing means I waste over an hour in traffic, so that's no fun!
The only job I ever worked where I couldn't wear jeans every day was fast food back when I was in college. I currently work for a very large Fortune 500 company where I wear jeans and polos every day. I can understand it when people work directly with customers in a very conservative industry (investment banking, for example), but dressing up should definitely be optional if you don't.
we tried to have casual friday but had to stop it - the Snookie wanna be in sales with the cropped white jeans and thong showing..... not a good look
acceptable casual for our office is khaki pants for men with polo shirts and flat shoes for women but the outfits are still pretty formal
I wear a suit five days per week. There is a very occasional exception on the Friday before a holiday weekend, but it is usually for charity (e.g. you can wear jeans if you pay $10 for charity).
It is believed that professional attire begets professional behavior. In my experience, this is true. You get used to it.
I've only worked in one office that didn't have a casual Friday dress code, and cropped pants were not acceptable. I agree with the pp who said to see how others dress to guage how to dress. Till then, a nice pair of slacks will work just fine. My new job is casual dress everyday, one of the perks of working for a web focused company :)
I will sometimes wear a sweater instead of a suit jacket on Fridays. I definitely wouldn't wear khakis or gauchos. If you must go more casual, wear a skirt.
@cubicalmouse: I wouldn't wear more casual pants unless you saw other people doing it, especially supervisors.
We don't get it either. If you don't get to dress down on Fridays, I wouldn't push it, especially since it's your new job.
I'm a Realtor and while my office frowns on wearing denim, I'm not one to follow rules. I was a bit reprimanded for coming to the office, even just for a minimal amount of time, in gym attire.
Our office is casual all the time, I don't think I could stand wearing business attire every single day. lol
I've always thought that, well, if you can't behave professionally while wearing jeans, that doesnt say much about your self control and work ethic. It's a different matter if you are seeing clients, of course.
I wear yoga pants and a Lululemon hoodie to work often these days. I was joking with my boss the other day that everyday is casual Friday, YAH! I know he would appreciate if I dressed up a bit more but he is happy with my work and I don't have to deal with any clients so we're cool. I know when I need to dress up and when I can be a slouch.
I wear a suit everyday. Boo. I would love to dress down because I hate wearing suits. Maybe my next job will have casual Fridays!
Well, maybe people will dress down a bit anyways..I'd see what the coworkers are doing on Friday's...but that is a bummer!
i have causual friday every day haha - I work in IT and its very casual here. We only have to dress up when customers come in the office which is rare. I wear jeans pretty much everyday but sometimes i want to dress up.
Yet another time I am so thankful that once I graduate my work attire will be scrubs!!
I think at a University, it depends on what you're doing and where you're working. For example, in the registrar's office, and department secretaries... I've never seen them wear jeans (except for the Calgary Stampede).
But, I work at a University too (as a grad student... so kind of work, I guess), and we wear jeans all the time. My PI (who is a Dean) doesn't wear jeans, he wears suits and a blue shit every single day. But, my co-PI, she wears jeans all the time.
I think it really depends on the department at the U your'e at.
Oh please don't get me started on this rant about jeans....
We aren't allowed dress down Friday in our department, yet other people in other department situated in the same building are.... (annoyance one)
My boss HATES blue jeans -- maybe because she is older, and wider (that wasn't a typo for wiser BTW) and says we don't look smart enough. However, it's not in the uniform policy.... and every other colour of jean is allowed, white, black, grey, green, purple... you name it, we've worn it to test this ruling, and she doesn't care. She also doesn't care about jeggings. Just blue jeans. Weirdly, she also doesn't seem to care when people have their butt cracks, or over-hanging stomachs on show (so long as it doesn't over-hang blue jeans - evidentally)
I work in the community health service, and I reguarly knee / sit on the floor to play with / weight children. So although I may not be 'business smart' I am always work smart, and more practical attired.
I just don't understand people's upset with nice, clean, not torn / worn out jeans
