i thought that was done before the guests arrive and they come in to sit from the other side.

Usually it is done before the guests get there.  I have also seen people make aisle runners with flower petals attached.  I personally decided to skip the aisle runner and the flower petals all together.  I figured it would just increase my likelyhood of tripping- haha.  I thought about adding just some flower petals for a pop of color, but I ended up putting a few roses on the side of some of the pews instead.

I intend on skipping the aisle runner, flowers and flower girl 😉

I would skip it.  They are all really a bigger hassel than you need.  I have been to one wedding with an aisle runner, which DH’s job was to make it go up the aisle.  It was such a pain as it didn’t want to go and just looked awkward.   Plus, it’s less clean up after and less expense if you haven’t already bought it.

We’re skipping the flower girl, aisle runner, and flower petals just to make things easier (and a little cheaper!).

If you really want the petals though, I’d ask someone to do it for you.  Do you have a day-of coordinator?  A sweet aunt that would love to be included?  A trusty bridesmaid that would jump on it?  I’ve even seen the grandmas of the bride & groom act as flower girls and do this.
